How do you get a horse clean without giving him a bath?

I have a show on Sunday.. today was the last day the it was going to be hot enough for me to give him a bath, so I did.. but it's going to rain a TON. So I know he's going to roll. He has a sheet on, but that won't keep his legs/neck clean. And he has 3 white socks. It will be too cold for me to bathe on Saturday.. so how do I get him clean?

I would still bath his legs, he'll live....take a kettle and boil some water to mix with the cold water if you dont have hot there and then you can towel dry his legs

Maybe a thorough brushing out, and then use Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover... I have a bottle, and it works wonders on dark stains on any color.

Lots of currying. Lots of work with the hard brush too.

Or just leave him out in the rain LOL

Even in Va, where you live, you can use cold water from the hose to do his legs...horses, don't get cold from their legs getting washed in the winter...as for his neck, brush as much as you can, and use hot water, and a towel, wring the towel out, and rub his neck and rest of his body, the dirt will come out, then use a dry towel, and show sheen if you have it and rub that in and he should be nice and clean, put on a cooler, and wait for him to dry all the way, and brush with clean brushes...he will look like he had a bath....and won't get cold either, I do it all the time....I had a grey, actully he was white, and that is how I kept him clean in the winter, even with him rolling in the red clay..good luck at the show....Cathy

I also clip the white to keep the coat short and therefore helps keep it cleaner. I agree with Ash about washing his legs....

Yes they do get cold from having legs washed in cold water during the winter. One of the quickest ways to cool a horse in the summer is to hose legs in cold water. Because of the major arteries and veins in the legs, they will cool very quickly that way. So hence why they could become very cold in winter with cold water. Would you like to be rinsed with cold water in the winter????

I have never had a horse get cold from having his legs and belly hosed off in the winter time...I would come home from fox hunting, with a horse covered in mud, and had to wait in line for the hose to clean off the mud and my horse, nor any of the other horses ever got cold, they had coolers, and blankets on....I have scrubed my grey horse's legs to get the red clay stains off in the winter, the only thing that got cold was my hands....no, I have never in 30 years seen a horse get cold, and shiver just because he got his legs washed and hosed with cold water...Cathy

Umm, horses are made to be outside in the winter. When I lived in NW Washington State, the horses legs were pretty much wet from rain all winter, plus a the surface hair on their backs, necks, etc. and they did fine. My gelding would stand out and let 2" of snow pile on his back when I had a nice bedded down stall for him to go into. A little water on the legs to get the mud off won't hurt anything. Walk him afterwards to get the blood flowing if you're worried about it.

I agree on wiping off his coat with a wrung-out towel. There are some dry shampoo products on the market that would work too, if he's got some really dirty spots you want cleaned.
