Do Mares Have Falso Labor?

My preggies mare went down today in the pasture and laid out flat, then I could swear she started contracting. She contracted once or twice, raised her head a few times, and then just laid there for a long while. I went out to check on her, and she got up, and hasn't been down since. This was about 1/2 hr ago. Do mares have falso labor like this?

I'm going to guess yes! My mare looked like she was getting ready 3 weeks ago, still no baby. I'm trying to be patient, but geeez already!

My problem is since this is a rescue mare, we have NO idea when she was bred. We're really guessing on when she's due, and with her being so thin it's hard to tell. She is quite spongy around the tail, I guess as spongy as she can be considering there's hardly any flesh there. She does have some milk, but not a full bag, and I can't get ahold of her teats to check her milk. Her vuvla MAY have elongated, but once again since she's so thin and sunken in back there it is REALLY hard to tell.

I guess you just have to keep a really good eye on her, and consult with your vet if you have any questions or think there is a problem. Good Luck, and great for you for rescuing this mare!

Would it be ok to let her foal out in the pasture? We really weren't expecting to bring a mare home, much less a pregnant one, and our stalls aren't quite set up yet. I figured the pasture would be better than an unsafe stall?

Here's a recent thread on foaling in a pasture: Foaling in a stall or in pasture?

Lots of good information.
