Goonhorse, the front feet are likely tender on gravel because of how they have been trimmed. Any time toes or sides (quarters) are allowed to become long, that is called a flare. Whenever you have a flare, you have a stretched white line. The higher up the flare, the higher up the white line is stretched. Since the white line is what provides the connection between the hoof wall and the inner structures, a weak (stretched) white line can allow the sole to flatten and the coffin bone to drop down a little bit (or a lot). Technically that is mild (or not so mild) chronic laminitis (the stretching of the white line) and sinking founder (the coffin bone dropping a little). Technically

Thanks JBandRio! Like I said, I'm not an expert, but I thought it looked foundered, but I guess I was wrong!

Goonhorse, not TOTALLY wrong, but the growth of the hoof as seen here is not what you normall see on a truly foundered foot, if that makes sense. Technically, yes, any time the coffin bone is forced into a different positon from it's healthy position, I guess you could call that founder. Whether it's mechanical, due to poor trimming, or metabolic, due to, for example, binging on grain, the fact still remains the coffin bone isn't where it's supposed to be. But when you have acute founder, the growth of the foot starts to follow a pattern that is indicative of the problem. This usually means there are high heels and dished toes (like here, though in this case the high heels and long toes are causing the "founder"), and there are clearly visible growth rings corresponding to faster heel growth rate and slower toe growth rate. I hope that makes sense
