how do I measure and calculate how many hands high my horses are?

I've always wanted to know how to tell how tall my horses are. How tall is a "hand" ? Oh and by the way, I'm in the USA, so in inches would help.

To measure a horse or pony you measure (with a measuring stick or tape) the horse's height at the highest point of their withers, while they are standing square on a flat, level surface.

As said, a hand it 4 inches. So anything that doesn't measure evenly is expressed after a period or point.

For example, let's say your horse measures 54" at the highest point of his wither. Four goes into 54 evenly 13 times, that's 13 hands. The leftover 2 inches are written after the thirteen. The pony is 13.2 hands.

This sounds corny but I have calculated my height in horse hands. I know that without shoes I am 16.2. With shoes or boots on, I am about 16.3 hands. So I know that if a horse is over the top of my head they are 17+. So depending on measuring your should height ect. you can get an idea that way. Otherwise you can buy or borrow a horse measuring stick (double check the stick calibrations with something like a Stanley tool tape measure as some sticks are made a little off).

We have a fancy stick that you hold up next to the horse to see how tall it is. Like a giant ruler. It measures in hands and inches. Too bad a lot of the horses are afraid of it!

Where do you buy the stick? I've been looking for one.
