Do I have to use hoof oil??

red_hors Do I have to use hoof oil? I've been told it doesn't have to be used? My friend uses it, and books tell you to. What should do???

Yes. If you do not use hoof oil, you need to use some other type of hoof dressing. wink

What are you using the hoof oil for? If it's for show you don't have to use it but it makes the horse looked finished. If it's for just maintaining the hoof you don't have to use it either. As long as you provide your horse with good footing(not too dry not too wet) and as long as your horse has good feet then you should be fine. I've never put anything on my horses feet and my farrier is always commenting on how excellent her feet are. It all depends on the horse and how they are handling their enviornment.

It really depends on the quality of horses hooves. Some horses don't need it. How do they look are they strong and healthy? Or cracked and chipped. As mentioned in other threads hoof care is from the inside out, so nothing replaces good nutrition and good genetics. Applying a quality hoof dressing can't harm so I use both Rio Vista's Hoof Stix and Hoof Manicure. The manicure is great for your hands too!

Many, many hoof products contain chemicals that actually dry the hoof out even more. If your going to get hoof conditioner, get good stuff....even if it costs a little more.

No, if your horse doesn't need it, you don't have to use it. Many use it right before a show, or a few weeks before a show. Some horses have weak hooves or live in really sandy areas and need the extra protection.

Mine hasn't seen oil or conditioner since he was a baby living in a sand run.

He has some seriously hard hooves to this date!!

I agree..not needed, a waste of money! The **** in the dressings and oils block the pores and make the hooves unable to "breathe."
If the hooves become really dry, I use a spray bottle filled with a mix of 1/2 water, 1/2 apple cider vinegar, and a couple drops of dish soap..helps get some moisture in them, thr vindgar opens the pores, and the water moisurizes, while the saop helps it stick to the hoof. Spray it before and after riding, all over the hoof wall, frog, and especially the coronet band. Or in the summer I just run a hose over them :-)

Hoof oil should not be thought of as a lotion for hooves. It is created to help hooves retain their OWN moisture that the body creates. If you use an oil designed for hooves, they are porous and allow infections to escape. Some people use burned motor oil on their hooves. This type of oil is not porous, and may lead to infection. wink
