ENrich 32 from Purina
I don't know much about grains. I didn't think it mattered since they get so little and its just to give their joint suppliments with.

We have a Campbells and a Tractor supply. Our vet is SO much closer is why I buy what he has. He also carries something called Horseman's Edge.

Oh I forgot to tell you guys. Hubby wants to thank yor for talking me out of feeding so much hay.

Now he wants you to talk me out of joint suppliments. He thinks its a waste of money. I think it prolongs the riding life of a senior horse. Because that is what I *read* and if its on the internet, it HAS to be true.

Your vet should be able to order you the Enrich 32

and if he says something about the protein firgure it out

4x14 = .48lbs of protien they are getting NOW

1 X 32 = .32lbs of protien which is what they would get on the Enrich 32

Many vets know next to NOTHING about equine nutritient this does not make them a bad vet just that the schooling is spent on other things

Purina could offer to give me horseman's edge and or omolene and I still would not feed it to my horses because of the NSC level.

You can also see if your TSC carries Kent brand feeds if you vet won't order the Enrich 32 for you

Older horses start to have decreased digestion as they age. Because of this, it's even more imperative that they have high nutrition diets with bioavailable sources of nutrients. It is also vital (more so than in middle aged horses) that they have plenty of essential amino acids.

The Omelene is not accomplishing any of this, especially in the amounts you're feeding.

If your vet has access to Omelene, then he should have no problem ordering Enrich 32 for you.

The fact that those are the 2 feeds that your vet feeds kind of gives at least a small insight into his nutritional knowledge. So, iow, you probably shouldn't put too much stock into what he says.

You've been given some great advice here on hay by the way.

Good thing I found this board! Of course, my horses may not thank you.

I only figured out the weight thing yesterday. I have 3 horses in the dry lot right now. Since the weather is warming up, I plan to only feed one 60 lb bale for now.

I do still plan to feed on the heavy side during the coldest months.

It's OK to feed more during really cold weather, just monitor their overall condition if they start to get more on the plump side you know you can cut back a bit, if they start to feel a bit less plump you know you can add a bit more.

Well tell Hubby I've got sad news for him.... LOL... Feeding JS's IS a good idea and CAN definately prolong the comfort and usable life out of a horse (and we humans too and our canine companions too )

Poor Poncho, now Ben has to tell him his mom is math illiterate & that he, in fact, does NOT get 200# of hay per day Good Lord, can you imagine?!

Yeah really! I wouldn't think ANY horse could eat 200# of hay a day! That would be one big ol' fat horse! Heck, there would be exploding horses everywhere, LMAO!

Winter Hay FYI

Just a little blib out of the University of Minnesota horse extensions newsletter about the amount of extra hay horses need when it's cold.

"Based on the newly released National Research Council’s Equine Nutrition Report, an adult horse requires 1.4% more energy each day for every degree below the critical temperature (5
0F). For example, if the temperature is –50F, the additional energy requirement would calculate out to about 2 Mcals or about 2 pounds of additional (in addition to the amount of hay they were already receiving) high quality hay for a 1,000 pound horse."

So my 1000lb horse would need 5lb more hay a day when it's -20 here in MN. This of course has a lot of assumptions about the amount of MCal in your hay, but might be a good rule of thumb to start with.
