Some times I feel (and vet has told me) we over vaccinate.... I still do, why ruin something that works.... I would feel awful if something did happen, but my vet had a point, if you don't feel comfortable doing it every year, just make sure you vaccinate for that which they can't treat... Rabbies!!! I always make sure my guys get fall shots, tube worming both spring and fall, and WNile both Spring and Fall. Rabies and Tetinus. Just my opinion!

I am caught in between. My trainer is also caught in between. Veruca had everything but rhino, flu and WN this year before I bought her. My trainer feels that she would get the vaccine if there happened to be a case around out area, but there was not ONE case of west nile in BC...but everyone got the vaccine? I know that I only get tetnus once every 10 years, so why should my horse get it every year? Flue shots? I dont get them......

I have always been for vaccinations, but then I have never had an animal have an adverse reaction to them. I saw a horse go down with West Nile, it was pretty bad. I also had my horse in a barn that had an outbreak of strangles, my horse was one of three that didn't get. I would feel awful if my horses, or dogs or cats for that matter, got sick from something that I could have prevented with a $15 vaccination. I guess since I compete and my horses are around a lot of other horses, I vaccinate. That being said, my husband likes to point out to me that I vaccinate my horse from west nile (my state had about 900 horses get infected last year, I think about 200 died), but I don't use bug spray on myself when I am outside.

See, if I was at a barn where allot of horses were coming and going, and I was travelling to shows all the time and what not, then I would consider it. Right now, we are on a 5 horse acerage boarding, every other horse there is a permanet resident, we are not going to be showing for a while and when we do, it will be local for a while.

I vaccinate because I have to. My horse came from a rescue so for the next 4 years he must receive his 4 way, West Niles, Coggins pulled, etc. Personally, I think most pets are overvaccinated. All my dogs are vaccinated as well since they are therapy dogs and I have to have shot proof for visits. I trust my vet to recommend what they feel is minimally necessary.

I vaccinate all three for tetnus Charlie has both - he goes out and about Denver is so old he is never out at shows any more so I dont do him for flu Sam does not have flu jabs as he took a really bad reaction to one about 3 years ago and almost died |

I vaccinate for everything but rabies... but I am on the fence about the issue since I have seen the strangles fail on multiple horses, and the way viruses mutate now who knows how effective they really are.
