Disappointed with foal

Have you ever had a foal out of your mare who was a disappointment either at birth or as it matured? What was it about the foal that you didn't like?

I was not too excited about Jack when he was first born....I was REALLY concerned with his legs....his front knees touched when he stood still, and so did his hocks.....and he came up on his pasterns SO slowly. Finally, by about a month old, he had started to really straighten out, and was up on his pasterns......and now, almost 4 months old, he's as close to perfect as I could want.....I hope he continues to grow correctly!

As for his trainability....he really didn't start "getting" what I was asking from him until he was about a month old as well. He just didn't "get" leading, didn't "get" picking his feet up, etc. I guess that's probably pretty common with babies though....they're just testing their limits.

Well I was always dissapointed when we got breeding stocks out of our paint mares. Espically the Sorrel stud colts!! LOL There was nothing wrong with them... other than they had no color and we had to get rid of them for dirt chaep!! LOL We would just end up looseing money on them is all.

This is why we discourage people from "breeding" their mare so they can get a similar performance horse, or something LIKE their mare.

Because the chance of disappointment is so high. Their expectations are too unrealistic. It is better, if you want something specific, to go to auction, sale, or private seller and purchase exactly what you want.

Sorry you are dissappointed in your baby. You aren't alone.

The only disapointment with my mares colt last year is I really wanted her to have a filly, and I wish his color would make up its mind on what it is... other than that, nothing really. I dont like the fact he despises the vet for shots, and I dont like that he got really sick at 1 month old... but thats why he hates the vet...... But all this means to me is well sex and color I cant change, but we will start younger on getting this next foal to excepting needles.

We recently had a foal (2 wks old) and I was dissapointed because I was really hoping for a champagne tobiano filly and got a bay tobiano colt! : )

He is wonderful for what he is. Great conformation, absolutely beautiful head and neck, and gaits up a storm. He just wasn't what I wanted. I got over my dissapointment real fast because both momma and baby are happy and healthy and not everyone else's is. He is a beautiful boy, and is for sale if anyone is interested. He will be reg. TWH and his name is SA Dealer's Pushin Queens (aka Dealer).
