direct reining or neck reining?

Do you like to direct rein or neck rein more? I like direct reining for both but sometimes neck rein.

Neither... I prefer to use my legs and body to steer.. but after that I will go with direct rein for when I want to horse to really work and bend... neck rein for trail riding.

It depends...I ride western (reining and western pleasure)...and I direct rein in a snaffle to get my mare really supple and bending and listening to my seat and legs and to get her light in the bridle. Then I will switch over to a shanked snaffle and ride her neck reined (since she's 9, she has to be ridden one-handed for shows) for practice. I myself am more comfortable riding with two hands...I tend to feel more balanced....but am learning to be more confident riding with one hand.

how about 'leg reining'? I cant stand neck reining... so obviously I put direct. western.

I said both... I ride english and western, so I direct rein for english, and neck rein for western. In my speed events (barrels, poles, etc.) I use a combination of neck and direct reining, though, so that my commands are more clear without being aggressive on her.

Palatine does both equally well. Although he prefers neck reining. He is learning to turn with only leg cues and no rein at all. Buddy is 24 and kind of lazy and although he is usually responsive to neck reining, he sometimes responds better to direct reining. Amiga, my yearling, will be trained for both. I like to have a good all-around horse

First I teach them how to move off leg pressure, then I had direct rein, then I teach indirect rein, but I always go with leg pressure first.

I think that direct reining gives you more understanding and control with the horse. Some of the horses I ride are trained for neck reining though so I prefer direct reining for both but I will use neck reining if nesscesary.

Like Shotgun, I use both. Showing I use more leg than anything and neck reining (illegal to direct rein), but during "training" we work on both combined together!
It really depends what I am working on and what I am doing!

Even though Gizmo is super trained in neck reining, most of the time I just use my legs.
