dilemma, question what would you do??

ok, you're in the pasture and you're haltering your horse. Out of nowhere another horse picks up speed and comes at you and your horse with his ears pinned making your horse a nervous wreck ( and you not exactly calm lol) what would you do and what would you expect from your horse???

Has this ever happened to any of you and what was you AND your horse on the leads reaction?? It happened to me tonight and I have to say it was a first and I would have loved to have thumped the one who came at us.

I would have waved my arms big and high shouting at him.
If that didnt work I would run to grab the nearest tree trunk to wrap around.

Blackie is the alpha mare, so I dont have the problem.. but I have that a similar problem with another horse. I'd finish haltering my horse ASAP and with the excess lead, swing it at the horse that's coming and use a lot of voice..

Well that's def happened to me before, all of the times it has happened to me if i know the horse is going to do that i bring an extra lead rope out and chase the horse away with it. Sebastian is usually very good about it and sometimes will just stand there with his ears back like "mom whats going on??? "

Yesterday on christmas when i rode Sampson tried to bite sebastians blanket and sebastian just stood there and kicked at him..didnt even move just kicked..

well Dollar was tense but still until Destiny was determined to get him and got about 5 feet from Dollars rump teeth barred and Dollar decided it was time to try and run while I was holding him!! I told Dollar to whoa and spun him around so he could see Destiny and he stood still reluctantly.

then I starting twirling my rope at Destiny and yelling at him to back off and he just stood there, he would not move out so I stepped towards him and swung my rope at him yelling and he backed off a little. As soon as we started for the gate and had our back to him he came after us again and Dollar didn't try to run that time but it was still tough running Destiny off.

This horse has never done this before and I am equally disturbed that Dollar would try to split with me holding him. I was a bit surprised by the whole thing but at least Dollar listened to me. Destiny usually gives me my space but tonight he was nasty.

Hmmm... well, I would have probably run AT the horse charging me. Funny, they EXPECT you to run away, because they are the ALPHA horse. Man, are they ever surprise when you go running straight for them! LOL. I had to do this when I boarded my mare a few years ago.

Sad thing is, as soon as I would start leading my mare away, the other mare would come right back for her. I don't know what I'd expect my horse to do, but all my mare would do is keep walking and occasionally buck at the mare after her. At home, the herd is only 3, so I tell them to "Get!" and they walk about as if they've been punished LOL.

I think that's a typical reaction Dollar. Can't expect him to stand perfectly still when a horse is charging at him with teeth bared! LOL

well theres 5 geldings, it was feeding time, freezing cold and they were all fighting to get to the gate which was where I was headed LOL I definitely let Destiny know it wasn't acceptable but if I would have run at him Dollar would have definitely split LMAO

Also, flanking me was Julio, the recently gelded stallion who had his ears pinned at us too but all you gotta do is yell and snal the rope and he runs AFTER he bucks out!

I guess I just wondered if Dollar trying to split even though I had ahold of him was like REALLY BAD manners or natural and not to get to irritated by it??? He has 3 new huge gashes on him so I know hes getting beat up and I imagine he didn't want to get nailed.

What surprises me more is Destiny would challenge me like that, in 7 months he has never done anything like that. Maybe they are just being spunky right now but I tell ya if Destiny would have gotten close enough I would have nailed him with the rope big time LOL

Something similar happened to me about a week ago, I went to go get a mare out of the pasture for a theriputic riding program I voleenteer at. One of the other mares who is older (alpha mare) followed us to the gait and didnt respond to me flicking the end of the lead rope at her. She started bucking at Zorta, the mare I was leading and and was really close to us. I was shoting at her to get away but she wouldnt, and zorta was really close to the electric fence and I was afraid she was going to back in to it because she was a nervous reck. I dont remember being scared, I just was making sure I was out of the way. I was trapped between both zorta who was ******** out and the horse that was bucking, there was no way I couldn't get out because the mare that was bucking was right by the gait. My friend was in the pasture next to me and she came running and screaming with a lead rope and wacked the horse with it . To top it all off it was a really super muddy day(My boot had sunk all the way down and it was the tall ones)! So I had mud all over my face and clothes! Not fun, and I had to stay and help with the program that night because I had a ride home with a friend! Okay well this is a long post.. I think i just like to hear myself talk lol!
