I do the braid like Sandra posted on my Morgan. It looks so nice. I also use to do the braid like CodyNtampa posted on my old TB (but mine was a lot tighter and closer to the crest).

The Mane is parted down the middle and divided so it's evenly in half on either side of the horse's neck. Then you simply braid the mane down the crest as if you were sitting on the horse's back (in fact, if you can sit on your horse, it makes it easier to do it that way the first few times until you get the hang of it). It is a traditional 3-plait braid bringing hair in from either side as you go. When you reach the end of the crest you continue braiding the hair off in the direction of the side you want it to end up on. The trick is to not braid too tight so the neck can flex and bend witout disturbing the braid. A lot of braiding practice will show you how tight/loose you need to make your plaits for your horse.
The forelock is the same braid except it is done standing in front of the horse and braiding down in the direction of the nose. Then the end is folded/hidden and the braid is folded up and tied into place as in the photo.

Wish I could help, but my boys won't let me practice braiding on their hair.
