Found it!

When lasers are used for castration the advantages over sharp surgery become very obvious. The horse will be back in training a lost faster with laser castration because of the minimal swelling and no open, draining wound to worry about. While the horse is under general anesthesia a CO2 laser is used to remove the testicles. Due to the closed incision the procedure is aseptic which means it is free of pathogens. The laser also reduces the chance of hemorrhaging and swelling as a result of the cauterizing effect. For horses that need to get back in training quickly laser castration is not only effective but also cost-effective.

WOW interesting. However I do not know of a single vet in the area that does that. We lay them all down and cut them. Never had an issue... plus the guy that does it for me is cheap... $50 includes the Tetanus Toxiod shot. I have been on a campaign to get many colts in the neighborhood gelded. LOL I have been rather successful. These are pretty much non horse people who bought something at the local sale because it was cheap! Ummm what about it being all male... LOL They did not think that would be a problem... so anyway I offer to haul the horse in the get it cut if they will pay the vet for his services.

Haas, you'd have to take them to an equine hospital for the laser surgery... we just gelded one of our colts... he was not very nice, but we still did it standing, with a twitch on and lots of tranq!

THAT is sooo nice of you. I wish more people were freindly neighbors like that. It seems that aspect of humanity is being lost.

My nieghbors, on the other side of my 18 acres called me one day to say my boys were playing over by the fence, and could I remove him because they were invading their privacy. And if my boys want to play with their son, then "I" have to call an make an appointment. What!!!! They're playing in their own yard. I wont even go into the requirement to make an appointment so kids can play together. Suffice to say, I've never made that call. I definitely did not grow up that way. The men would help each other, and the women baked for each other. And the kids were playing in all the yards. I don't like the way we're progressed as a society.

Ok, back on subject.

The "horse" vet finally called me back, and we made an appointment for the 19th. Coincedentally, she castrated AL when he was little. Small world. Anyway, she explained the proceedure to me. She knocks him out, and lays him down. Cuts him open and remove the testicles, and leaves the incision open for drainage. She gives me bute for him. Every day (for 5 days) he's to be exercised 10 - 15mins (very important). She didn't say anything amount smashing the tubes, so something like that. It's way more expensive than $50.00. Trip fee, proceedure, and medicine $170.00.

Yewwww! Poor horsey. I don't know, he looks sad or down or something. I hope I can stomach it when CT gets cut. I get light headed over stuff like that.

He's still tranquilized I imagine. Also, he is probably sad just thinking about the whole thing!

As a small animal vet tech, I can attest to this. I've assisted countless surgeries, both traditional and laser, and have seen castrations done with both.
