i was thinking, i have big feet (size 11 womens), and it's hard to find tall boots that would fit short legs, wide calf, and bigger feet in the womens styles, so is there a difference in men's boots as to women's? or are they totally the same (or close enough)? Currently, i ust wear half chaps and paddock boots, but in the future i would like to get some tall boots. Sorry, i forgot to mention, I would be looking at english Field boots.

Well they are basically the same. They feet come in bigger sizes and generlly are wider. But from what I've seen the calves don't come as big so I don't think they would work for you. What size are you looking for (height, calf, etc)? Price range? If you are really that hard to fit then you might have to start looking for something custom or semi custom, costwise it sucks but sometimes it's what you need to do. |

For tall boots, mens often run slimmer and taller, so you might be out of luck there. The foot area is also wider (D width as opposed to women's B width). I agree with Preppy, semi-custom or custom might be the way to go. Petri (sp?) boots come in a LOT of different size combinations. Dressage Extensions carries them and I think Dover does too.

Women generally have slimmer heels than men, so their shoes are structured accordingly. Obviously each person is different, so it pays to just try things on. Have you looked at Ariat boots? Their size range is huge.

Really right now, i'm just looking at things, no real intention on buying any, perhaps in a few years, but i am happy with my half chaps. i have looked at a few places here and there, i haven't really looked that deep into them though, so that would probably be a start for me. thanks anyways though, i guess i have to look deeper.

I've looked at the Ariats and even the gaiters with boot combo are too long in the leg for my short fat legs. If I ever want quality top boots I'm going to have to get customs made. I feel for you.. I really do

I don't know if it is true or not but I was always told that mens shoe and womens shoes have different arch systems in them too. I have found in the western boots that I have, I have a mens 7.5 d and womens 9 (ariats) and the men's boots always feel so flat when I put them on. I much prefer my ariats which is a shame because the mens are full quill ostrich, beautiful, but just not as comfy.

I'm a size 11 with wide (wide) calves... I *did* find some off the shelf boots that fit (via internet order) but that worked for ME because the footbed and calf were a set proportion, and tall. They could be too wide or too narrow in the calf for you... too tall or not tall enough... that's the rub. Now that I'm looking to buy something nicer, I'm resigned to having to order CUSTOM or semi-custom to get the wide-enough calf, tall enough leg, and zips where I need 'em. Petrie's are super customizable at a good price - there's a seller on eBay who's been very helpful in this regard and is offering them at about $200 off retail. Hopefully I can get some by the end of the year to have them in time for next show season. |

ah well, it looks like customs are what i should be looking at. yay, for awkward shapes! oh well, at this rate, it loks like i can get a nice pair in about 5 years, or more (daddy...!). so i just measured myself now, and wow, i am unproportioned! my feet are size 11, my calves are 17 in. (holy, It's all muscle too! that's what 7 years of gymnastics, dance, and riding does to you...), and 15.5 in height i think. that looks really weird now that i look at it.
