Difference between show ratings? Abbreviations?

What is the difference between the different show ratings? I've heard of an A and a C, is there a D and a B? What is expected with the different ratings?

I show an Arabian and I'm being encouraged to attend an A rated show in September. Next year I'll be going to a week long youth clinic with a C rated show at the end. I'm really interested in knowing the difference.

Also if you have any advice for showing at rated shows please share that as well. I've only showed at Arabian Community Shows (ACS) so far.

Oh, and what do these abbreviations mean?

AOTR
ATR
JOTR
JTR
ATH
AAOTR
AOTH

I think that's all of them lol.

Sorry if these are stupid questions!

Regarding the show rating system:
You can compete in shows recognized by USEF and AHA as "A," "B," "C" rated or as Local Member, which is non-rated.
The "rating" is identified by USEF according to the minimum number of classes that must be offered and the maximum and minimum amounts of prize money that must be offered.
Local Member non-rated shows offer no prize money, though shows can host futurity classes with those recognized classes, which futurities DO offer prize money. Futurity classes, however, run on their own rules (which usually duplicate the rules of the recognized classes, but which aren’t policed by the approving organizations).

AOTR - Amateur Owner To Ride
ATR - Amateur To Ride
JOTR - Junior Owner To Ride
JTR - Junior To RIde
ATH - Amateur To RIde
AAOTR - Adult Amateur Owner To Ride
AOTH - Amateur To Handle

Thanks Sandra! You are always so helpful.

One more question...we are paying off my mare in monthly time payments. So I wouldn't be considered her owner yet, right?

In the case of a contract sale you should still be considered the owner for showing purposes.
I have not seen a show entry form for this year but there is usually a section that covers a situation such as a contract sale on it.

The current rule book says:
Quote:
ARTICLE 1205. REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS.
1. See USAE/EC Rules for Registration requirements for all horses.

2. A copy of the registration certificate showing proof of ownership must be submitted with entry form at the time of making entry.
a. In the case of a lessee, pending transfer, contract of sale or cash sale, a copy of the registration certificate must be submitted, along with proof of lease or ownership and these documents must be attached to the copy of the registration certificate and must contain the correct registered name and number of the horse, date, and the signature of the seller or lessee. (Exception: Horses in Amateur Owner classes. See USAE/EC rules for registration requirements for horses in Amateur Owner classes.)

As far as the different ratings, C is above a schooling show, B is higher than C, and A is the highest. I have never seen a D rated show, but they might exist. B is a rating though. I don't know exactly what their effect is, but A rated shows are generally packed with tough competition, and the rules are very strict. For Arab shows, I don't know the exact rules, but you can look them up on the AHA website!
