Discuss Difference between Omolene 500 and Purina Race Ready at the Horse Health forum - Horse Forums.

    Difference between Omolene 500 and Purina Race Ready

    I have looked into the ingredients, and as far as i can see, they are the same as far as protien/fat/fiber/calcium/phosphorus/etc go..

    Is there actually any really difference in thses 2 grains?? I am currently feeding LMF Gold, which is great, but im looking for a little more energy out of my [lazy-barrel] horse, and dont mind switching grain, so I'm looking for soemthing else..
    Or if you dont like either of these grains, which type would you recommend?

    ps..ive tried Purina Ultium and LOVED it, but its far to expensive..i need something on the cheaper side..

    You have the link to Omolene 500 for it and Race Ready above. From what I could see the 500 has beat Amplify nuggets that are mostly fat.( I use them for my hard keeper) and the RR doesn't. Also the RR has higher Thiamin, Vit. E and Iron.

    Feeding excess grains is rarely a good way to get extra 'energy'. It would be like an athlete eating lollipops. Instead you would focus on slow burning carbs and protein with high quality nutrition, perhaps fat depending on exactly what type of sport you're talking about. The same applies to horses. With the sport you're doing, some simple carbs are needed, but very little above and beyond what's found in the natural diet (hay/pasture). Easily supplied by a low grain food or adding 1-2 lbs of oats to a grain free food.

    I have no idea of the ingredients of either of these feeds. I have a feeling that if you compared them there would be noticeable differences. Just no clue what they are. Not economical for them to be producing two identical or nearly identical feeds, they would simply discontinue one of the products if that were the case.

    The Omolene 500 does contain beet pulp, I don't believe the Race Ready does. If I had to take a stab, I'd venture a guess that the Omolene 500 has slightly higher quality ingredients than the Race Ready, that is just a guess though.

    You get what you pay for, remember that. These are not comparable products at all to Ultium. These are sweet feeds which are not going to be as 'usable' to the horse, and carry a much higher risk of creating digestive upsets/disturbances.

    well that was the problem...the ingredients they listed were exactly the same..thats why i was asking for differences..but your right, Omolene has beet pulp in it, which RR doesnt....

    so would you recommend Ultium, over the other 2 then? its so expensive, but if its going to be more of a performance feed as opposed to a sweet feed, i guess i could suck it upa nd start feeding it again...since thats really what im looking for..thanks!

    You're likely in an area that doesn't require specific ingredients to be listed. Did it say stuff like forage products, plant protein products, grain products, etc...?

    How much of the current feed are you giving? (Trying to get a picture of about how many calories the horse needs.)

    umm. im not sure if it listed any of those, although i would consider them both to be grains, not forage or plant..

    he only gets grain when i ride[so about 4-6 days a week] and i have him about 3qt..[a full scoop]

    he also gets about 2qt of rice bran when i ride him hard[i use that to mix all my powder supplements in]

    If the ingredients were listed generically, it would have all those on there, perhaps in different orders, but they would be there. Or did it say stuff like corn, oats, wheat middlings, etc...?

    Onto the grain though, you're really not giving enough to be able to feed something like Ultium. That's not a bad thing, just means he doesn't need that many calories. Same would be true for either of the other two feeds you're looking at (as well as the LMF feed you're currently feeding).

    Do you have access to Triple Crown feeds? Trying to think of good feeds that will fall in your needed calorie range.

    i do have access to Triple Crown, and i was looking into TC Complete..however, is was $28 a bag, instead of Omolene which was $18 a bag, so i was more looking into the Omolene, but if you think TC Complete would be a better fit? im not against feeding it...

    $28 would be a very high price. But considering where you are, it very well might be.

    Regardless, that too is going to be too many calories. I was thinking along the lines of Triple Crown Lite. It's fed at 2-4 pounds a day, which would fit in well with her calorie needs if she's doing fairly well in weight currently.

    The Complete is quite a bit higher in calories and has a minimum feeding level of 5 lbs a day. So a lot more calories.
