Practice some sitting trotting... and concentrate on rocking your body from side to side with his steps... once you get used to doing this, you'll be able to know, when you rock to the right, his right shoulder is forward, and vice versa.

That will really help you to pick up the proper diagonal, too. Don't be afraid to sit a few strides once you change into the trot. You'll get more brownie points from the judges for picking up the proper diaganol first, than for starting to post immediately and having to change.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone! That is super helpful. Now I've got my confidence back in doing it. My trainer is helping alot to. She has me rocking my body with his legs at the jog. Now I will do it at the sitting trot.

And while your rocking back and forth, just say to yourself (out loud if it helps) "Up, down, up, down".

Jumpthemoon's tip of the day:

It is easier to get the correct diagonal if you wait for the horse to trot a few steps BEFORE you start to begin to post.
