No no, not at all. There are many pure breeds that I love. At the moment I'm a single mum of 3 and just don't have the time for that kind of thing. I also don't have the money for a horse each so I have to have something that can switch and change and suit us all - and be perfectly happy doing that!

Little Red Dun while off the top of my head I can't think of any quality cross breeders (not that they aren't out there just that I don't have specific names) I was over the weekend looking at Friesian classifieds (dreaming) and came across quite a few nice Friesian crosses. Just look up Friesian on dreamhorse.com and put in a lower price (around $7000) and you will come up with alot of crosses.

Your right this is a good convo.

FLYING W FARMS - HORSES FOR SALE

I think its a very good conversation too, its something I haven't seen brought up in this manner in a while.

I'll go looking on dreamhorse and see what I can find. I didn't mean it as a challenge or anything of course. I was just curious to see what was out there.

I started to think of the crosses of horses when they were talking about the "designer" dog breeds. People will always be that way. They want to have the rare, not everyone else has, whatever it is. That's how some of the breeds became what they are now. Silly Quarter Horse industry is a several breeds in itself . I love the Quarter Horse, all I know really. What is a Warmblood and Sport horse? Are they a certain breed?

That depends on who you ask.

To me, a Warmblood is more a "type", but has a pedigree and is inspected and approved by a registry. I don't really consider Warmbloods a "breed" in the traditional sense because you can breed a German Warmblood to a Belgian Warmblood and get an Oldenburg (or something like that ). However, with a 'real' Warmblood from a good registry, you will get a horse whose pedigree is full of horses that were also inspected and approved, and has the conformation the registry is looking for (usually aiming toward Dressage, Jumping, or something similar).

A Sport Horse to me is a horse that is conformationally correct for a certain sport, such as Hunter, Jumper, Dressage, or Eventing. Sometimes they are inspected and approved, and sometimes not. Sometimes they have pedigrees and sometimes not. I think something like Draft/Thoroughbred crosses would fall into Sport Horses. They might not have 6 generations of "Warmblood" back there, but they are excellent for their chosen sport and perform well.

Ideally, a Warmblood is a Sport Horse as well, which makes it all the more confusing to me. You want a Warmblood that is conformationally correct for your discipline. To me, its more a matter of pedigree I guess. With a Warmblood, you go back and you see a pedigree full of other "Warmbloods", but with a Sport Horse you may or may not see that. Sport Horses are more about performance and Warmbloods are more pedigree plus performance.

This is just my take on Warmbloods versus Sport Horses though, and I'm sure there are others on the forum that can explain it a lot better than I and know a whole lot more about it.

Edited to add: Here's a good site to help. Home Page They have nine different registries; some are Warmbloods and some are Sport Horses. If you go to the Q & A section, you can compare and see how the registries work different for the Warmbloods and the Sport Horses.

Smile

It is a shame that some of those people who want rare and hard to find horses do not check out the endangered breeds and get one of those...their doing so might help to save the breed for future generations.
