Yes, I'm curious too... I didn't think cushings/IR was particularly rampant with thoroughbreds...

i think Cushing's is about 5-10 years ahead of IR "awareness". not being familiar with either, we hadn't recognized their full scope of signs/symptoms (until recently, from better research) and likely had been treating the symptoms more so than the cause for a while.
Cushing's is far more common than once thought as it manifests itself in much the same way as old age, or what we attributed to old age anyway.... many cushingoid horses were written off as simply aged (remember when late teens was considered OLD?) and not treated. this might be a small part of why horses are seemingly living longer these days as well: we are aware now. cushing's also seems to be non-discriminatoury and diverse in its degrees of s/s and its victims.

My Barney has a touch of EPSM, and he also appears to have a problem with IR. He is very cresty.

I used to feed (many moons ago when the EPSM diet came out) Strategy and Veg Oil. Did not work.

More recently I started using Buckeye Safe N Easy ( well below the recommnded amounts) with BOSS and he looked great, moved great, felt great. He was still very cresty though

Now I feed ration Balancer and BOSS ( switched to BOSS from a pre fab fat source) I can't say that I am happy with that combo. I don't feel he looks or feels as good on a RB. I may switch him back to low levels of SNE with a loose vit/min and ditch the RB. I think even though the SNE was below the suggested levels, he did well the small amount of extra fat provided by the pellets

I have tried
SNE
Strategy
Ultium
Alfalfa Pellets
RB (Buckeye and Progressive)
Oats
Beet Pulp
BOSS
Rice Bran
Flax
Roasted Soybean

All of this in some sort of combo or another

I put my mare on Strategy when it was THE BEST THING going, and it was a train wreck.

I had moderate success feeding her Triple Crown Complete supplemented with Athlete though.

Drafts, what is SNE?

It's the saccharomyces cervisiae. It's a strain of live yeast. It works in the hindgut to help digest plant fiber. In layman's terms, a digestive aid.

I feed Seminole Spillers Cool Mix and it seems to be working great. Very low starch and it has a bunch of healthy ingredients. It smells so good it makes me want to eat it.

What about it?

Yes, I realize this is an old thread

Protein is generally not an issue for the IR horse.
