I would also suggest: Rock the saddle forewards and backwards (cantle to pommel) and if there is a HUGE rock, the saddle doesnt fit. But if it has very minimal movement, it should be fine. You should also be able to run your hand down the front of the panels between the horse and have contact with the saddle and the horse on each side of your hand.

Be careful when you try to move the saddle foreward a bit more. There should be two fingers from the shoulder or "scapula" and the saddle front (at the biggest part of the flap)

As Equest. says you need to check that the bars touch evenly when the saddle is in the proper position . You can use towels as well as your hand and also after a ride the sweat marks should be even without scufed up hair or dry spots. Hope this makes sense.

me too i think you should place it 1" forward. lift the flap of the saddle and look if the point pocket is parralel with the side of the horse. If it is too large it is not so bad but if it pinch the horse, it is bad. You should be able to put between 2 and 3 finger maximum under the pommel. Look if you see the sun under the saddle for spine clearance. ride the saddle with a clean pad and look if the dirt and sweat is even , you will know if it fit well.
