Dappled...

I'm a bit confused about this. When I got my horse he was a bit unhealthy and never had dapples. Now that I have had him and he's gotten healthy, he has some dappling around his stomach and rear (he is a palomino). Can any horse have dapples or is it a genetic thing? Is it a sign of health? Why would they just develop now?

Sorry if this question is incredibly dumb, but my thread about the silver dapple pony got me thinking about it.

After some searching on the threads just saw that it is a sign of a healthy coat.

Woot!

Yes it is a sign of health and some horses will have it part of the year and not in other parts of the year. This is nothing to do with the silver dapple gene as some horses with that gene do not have dapples! Weird I know... LOL

Like said its a sign of a healthy coat and good nutrition. My bay usually has them all year round, just not as noticeable in the winter. usually if you feed oil or BOSS with their grain your horse will have more dapple.

Dapples are genetic. Good health may or may not cause them to pop out. A horse can dapple one year but not the next. They may appear on the Winter or Summer coat.

My palomino paint had "dapples" during the spring but they were more like spidering...it was awesome looking. His diet had not changed but he only had those "dapples" for about a month and now they are gone!

it can be from good health but some just come and go randomly too, one year they can have tons then the next none and its usually in the summer...
