I must say, those photos look to be from years gone by, like a scene from little house on the prarie, VERY nice! Its hard to believe people still live like that!

Funny K, but your ASSUMING was FAR from the mark. Nothing I posted about that picture was to MOCK anyone. It was to STOP people from ASSUMING before they know the "rest of the story". Seems it was needed. But will it be understood?

Ok, now I'm going to assume you did not mean that like it sounded otherwise I would be doing this: (banging head against computer)

I remember reading about you doing that [tying behind the wagon] a while ago.

I would have done the same thing [If I had a wagon LOL] but instead I just use a huge eucalyptus tree with a strong lead rope and stud chain, or a be nice halter.

I tie mine to the kids.

Though, that might be more dangerous than a pole....kids bite and kick...

BTW BW, cute kid and cute horse.
Not that you were serious about literaly tying your horse to her, but the comment kind of hit close to home. A woman I know lost her daughter a couple years ago when the little girl tied her ponys reins around her waist. Hideous.

I wish more effort had been put into training that pony.

WoW It just blows my mind how smart, sweet and gentle belgians (drafts in general) are!! Thats crazy your husband had to reins and used his VOICE!! I don''t even think my dog would listen that well!!

Thanks for that informative information. You are so blessed to be able to grow up in the real country!!! That is so many people's dream!! I know its mine!!

Tying a horse with reins- no problem, if the horse gives to pressure.
Banat - please see my explanation. Just about every "way" under the sun was tried, and not just by me, because I don't believe I know it all about horses, so I looked to other knowledgeable horsemen to help me with a horse that I could not bring round. Nothing worked. Sometimes the ends do justify the means. Break her to lead or send her to the killers. Had she broke her neck or leg, it would not have put her in any more danger than she was already in if she could not be "fixed". And had she broken a leg or neck she would have been put out of her misery in less than a minute. We always work prepared for a disaster. So it was not cruel or abusive. It was completely necessary.

Isn't the method your using simply teaching the horse that pulling causes pain to him so he is smart enough not to do it?? Kinda like see sawing the reins, some people do it to lower the horses head and believe they mastered collection when infact the horse is just getting away from the pain. To me, such methods shouldn't be taken. That's like teach your kid not to eat something and putting something in it that makes their stomach upset or them sick.
