Dandruff from MTG

I started using MTG on Breez's mane a few weeks ago. I went by the directions and just put it on once a week. And then I noticed she was getting HORRIBLE dandruff. Am I doing something wrong? Like, putting too much on for instance, or something? Or is she just not taking well to it? Her skin didn't seem to bother her in any other way, like itching or anything, but she sure had yucky dandruff. What do y'all think, should I stop using it? I actually had stopped using it after I noticed that she was getting dandruff, and I think maybe it might be a tad better now, but it's hard to say.

The dandruff is most likely the dried MTG flaking off. If there's no irritation to her skin and she doesn't seem to be having a reaction to it, everything should be alright. I know in the beginning when I started using it I had the same problem with Skeeter's mane. What I found fixed it is making sure to wipe away any excess that might have gotten on the crest of his neck where the fur met his mane. Also, I don't find you have to wash it out between doses but just using a damp towel to get rid of any residue does wonders.

My sister mentioned the same thing, but it sure does look a lot like dandruff. I'll have to try wiping off any excess that goes down onto her neck. I didn't think there was much, but maybe there was more than I thought. Thanks!

My mare has dandruff too and I have not used MTG on her at all. My vet was just out 2 or so weeks ago for shots and I asked her, "what's up with the dandruff. Is it something I need to worry about or treat with MTG?" Her response to me was, it was completely normal and it is from their winter fur pushing out their summer fur. Hope this helps some. Take care.

Yeah, I've noticed that horses get dandruff in the winter, but this "dandruff" was just around the crest of her neck, so I figured it was just from the MTG.

OMG! the same thing happened to my boy... I quit using the mtg because i was afraid it would start to itch...which would completely ruin the point in using mtg.

MTG is Shapley's MTG, it's a grooming product used for hair growth, rain rot, scratches, fungus, dry skin, and as a leave in conditioner. It works wonderfully, it has an antifungal agent so it will clear up rain rot like no other, IMO. You should always do a test spot on your horse to see if they can tolerate it. Also be cautious about turn out in the full sun while the product is on.

Goonhorse- my mare had the dandruff on her neck too, how odd. Same spot as your horse. I've been thinking about putting MYG on as a conditioner but it just won't stop RAINING. ARGH!

Yup, that's what it is. Here's the website, too. Shapley's - Making A Difference.

Well, Breez started to get "dandruff" (which now I'm thinking maybe it's just the MTG flaking off) after I started putting the MTG on. I doubt rain would affect MTG much--it's even hard to get off with dish soap! I keep dish soap in the barn to clean buckets and stuff, and after I put MTG on, I just squirt a bunch into my hand and rub it around and it usually takes the smell off pretty well.
