Dandruff?

Ok so I brought Yukon in today to give him a good grooming, as he isn't brought into the barn to just chill regularly, and he was really sucking up to me lol. He has been gaining weight like crazy since we moved barns and is loving the sand arena (didnt have one at the old barn) He always has to have a roll as soon as he's let out in it and gets very dusty. So as I was brushing him today I noticed that he had some dandruff along his neck and shoulders along with the regular dust and dirt that horses manage to accumulate. I've been looking at some other similar topics and the solutions are to give the horse a bath with dandruff shampoo, problem is its too cold here to bathe him. Is there any other options to help get rid of it?

I could heat water up I guess... but thats not the part that I'm worried about. The barn isn't heated and we could get snow any day now (as sad as that is ) I don't want to bath him if I don't have to seeing as he's older and gets chilled really easily. I have no doubts that the shampoos and scrubbing would help.

Is there such a thing as a lotion maybe that could be put on because isn't dandruff just dry flaky skin?

What is his diet? Sometimes a little added fat can help dandruff immensely.

Right now he's on safe choice (complete feed), 60/30/10, and beat pulp for the winter and has been on this combo for about a month now as we just moved to this barn and to get him to gain weight. What would be a good choice for the added fat? Possibly canola oil or some other to mix in? Wouldn't hurt for the up coming winter either I'm sure

Also should add, he has always had the tendency to be dehydrated and has been on electrolytes

Oil works for some horses, not for others. I'd go for a couple cups of BOSS, myself.

you could try giving him a cup of vegetable oil daily, or flax seed. i just bought a bottle of healthy haircare - heard its amazing stuff. it says on the bottle that it helps moisturize the coat and helps with dandruff. i used it on fred after i body clipped and not hes all velvety

Flax seed is what we use. Also if it's localized to one area we use some spray on stuff. eqyss mickroteck

i put on mineral oil on for the mane and tail, only problem in it collects dirt like crazy and so the next day you come out theres usually no dandruff but it looks gross, and for the body i spray on Apple cider vinegar and i add it to the feed as well(just not to much)
