Question Dandruff

My horse has bad dandruff around her mane. When it was warm out I was using conditioner on her- which was helping, but now that it is getting much colder I'm not sure what to do. The cold dry weather seems to be making it worse. Any ideas? Thanks.

Here's information that I have on dandruff...also known as Seborrhea. It is a flaky scaly disease of the skin. Not an itchy skin disorder. There are 2 types.

Primary seborrhea is rare, localized to teh mane, tail, and front of teh cannon of the hind limbs. Referred to as "stud crud", though not limited to males.

Secondary seborrhea is known as actual skin infections, nutritional deficiencies, liver disease, intestinal malabsorption (doesn't absorb nutrients right), Vitamin A deficiency, sex hormone imbalance, and autoimmune skin diseases.

If it is dry, scaling and flaking looks much like dandruff and skin is healthy.
Oily seborrhea scales are crusty, and sometimes yellowish-brown color.

Can resemble ringworm, mange.

TREATMENT - if it is secondary, find the underlying cause and treat.

Yours sounds like Primary - clip hair coat at regular intervals and use sulfa or salicylic acid shampoo (Dandruff Shampoo you can find at the grocery store for humans)

If it is oily, you'll need Benzoyl peroxide and sebum dissolving shampoos to help loosen scales. And Thiomar cream or Pragmatar ointment to treat individual spots. If secondary bacterial infection has set in....antibiotics is necessary.

Try Dandruff Shampoo....Selson Blue works great..Head and Shoulders as well.... Your horse just might have typical Dandruff.

Is it dandruff or dry skin? Two very different things. If it's dandruff, conditioner will not help. It will perhaps make it worse. Dandruff is caused by a fungus and can usually be treated in a similar way to rainrot.
