Curious

At the last place I worked at I worked with arabians, and one of the younger horses mane was on the wrong side.
I asked my boss what was up with that, she told me since her mane was long enough to be to one side, It always went the wrong way, she said she tried everything, and so did the trainer!
If i didnt know any better, it looked completely normal, very pretty.
Is there a way to fix it? And is it possible that it just 'goes' that way?
just curious, I was thinking about it today, so I thought I'd see what you guys think

which side a horses mane naturally lays on, without human intervention, is just something that is up to chance. Some fall to the right, some fall to the left, and some split in the middle the whole way or part of the way.

When my filly was born I began as soon as it was long enough combing it to the right side. I banded it and everything Now it is over there.

I am not sure if there is a 'correct' side any more though.

No.. there isn't a "wrong" or "right" side, that i know of lol. It's just whichever side it naturally falls to... usually if it's thick, or you want to train part of the mane to lay flat on one side, you can braid it, or use a thick conditioner to comb through and weight it down a bit more

I've never heard of a "correct" side that the mane is supposed to be on... which side is correct? And why does it matter?

The right side is normally the "correct" side. I was always told it is because if you didn't have a halter you could reach under the neck and grab the mane on the opposite side and lead them.

Scout had a funny mane, when I first got him most of it was on the right side but matted up. I clipped it short and banded it to be on the right. A few days after I took the bands out it all went to the left side, ever since then most of his mane will stay on that side.

I have always been told the right side is the correct side. I agree with the mane thing! It is so handy to have a piece of mane to lead by under the neck!

Western it is traditional for the mane to be on the left, because most ropers are right handed and you don't want the lariat to snag the mane.

English it is traditional for it to be on the right, but I don't think it's a deal breaker in either discipline.

my horses mane switches sides that it lays on.
I have no idea how or why, but it stays one length lies perfectly flat on the left side of his neck, then randomly over a period of a week or two, it switches sides and lies perfectly flat on the right side with no intervention.
There isnt really a right or wrong side, but if your showing it needs to be braided on the right side of the horse.

I find it funny the little things people will come up with to pick about. Which side the horse's mane falls on is genetically determined at the time of conception. I don't know who started this stuff about right side and wrong side, but IMO, it's silliness. Who made the rule and where is the reasoning behind it and the scientific documentation as to which is the correct side. There are more important things your horse requires you to worry about for him than which side his mane lays on.

I've never heard of a right and wrong side... My NSH filly's mane is on the right and my QH and Paint's manes are on the left. :-)
