YES. I would use one and use one myself.

Because this is a PARTIAL gag bit, you need the curb chain/strap because it becomes a leverage bit once the bit has rotated 100%.

You can change the amount of "lift" the bit does by tightening or loosening the strap. Mine engages BEFORE the leverage engages. Because I do not like it rotating 100%.

That and it keeps the rings from rotating OUT when turning on a direct rein.

I don't like them hinging and pulling all cockeyed. Because it pulls on the poll into the turn, and I don't personally need that kind of lift in the turn.

So YES I say a curb strap/chain should be on it because of the fact it is a partial gag, and does have leverage once it is fully engaged. Though you should not have to fully engage this bit.

^ BW you and I understand that I was trying to understand what the OP was using the bit for to make sure that the use of the bit was understood. Personally it is not a bit I have found useful with many horses.

I have also seen this bit used incorrectly by some who did not know how to use the bit. They put the curb strap in the little triangle spot below the large rings!

I am thinking about using it on my all around horse for when we do the speed events. I am also considering the jr cowhorse that has been recommended as well.

Now I have to ask where it should go?

I use a Wonder like the one in the pic with 2 sets of reins, most of the time just as a split snaffle and as a sort of e-brake on my little grey who can be a bit of a meathead when she chooses to and is really good at evading the bit. I have not been using a curb strap/chain.

You use a curb chain, an it goes on the very top ring where your bridle also goes. I have found that they do good for speed events depending on the horse. I also would rather see those than the big combos.
Here is one on a horse.....
