I'm just just teaching my new litte project horse how to cross tie. Tonight was his 1st time acutally

Here's what I did tonight:
"Willie" (horses) already ground ties like a pro in his rope halter and 12 foot line, so I put his leather halther in over top of his rope halter, added 1 piece of binder twine to the right side of his halter, and cliped only one cross tie onto the piece of binder twine. Then I continued with the grooming I had already started. Willie always backs up when I'm combing his mane, so we started there. He'd make the cross tie tight, and for the 1st 2-3 times he did that, I walked him forward with the use of the rope halter and lead. Then the 3rd to 4th time, it was up to him to make the decision. He hit the limit, head went up, he looked at me, and I stood there in front of him, and said "well, it's your decision now. I showed you the right way." He looked at me and lowered his head and started licking and chewing. It was enough to release all the pressure, but he didn't step forward. So back to combing I went, and he put his head up again. I did the same thing as before and he walked forward right away. I made a huge deal about it and praised him.

After that when ever he hit the end of that one cross tie he would step forward. Not to bad for a 3y/o who was rearing when lead 1 month ago.......He's a smart cookie

Now I'll do that for a few more days, and do the same with the other side. Then I'll add them together. I like to leade a lead on them of some sort while they are getting comfortable with the cross ties. It's just a nice quick thing to grab if something happens.

How can I get him use to them? Should I just put him in them and let him fuss by himself? Of course I would stand near by to make sure he doesn't hurt himself.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!
MY trainer will thread a lead rope through the hoops were the ties attach, leave it loose so they can get away or not hurt themselve. She does this on young horses and ones that have not been on them,
