Critique My Mare.

She's TB/QH. She's 7 years old and she's going to be my low level eventer. I'm interested in a confo critique because I can critique movement, how she jumps.. etc. But when it comes to confo I really don't have a lot of knowledge.

So if anyone could critique her conformation and then maybe explain to me whats good and why and what's bad and why that would be great! I would love to learn more about conformation. [I do know the basics.. long back, toed in, toed out, big knees, etc..]

Sorry.. this is the only real confo picture I have. I know you need a back veiw and front veiw for an extremely accruate critique.. but I hope this is enough. Thanks!

She seems a tiny bit butt high but could be my meds, and/or how she's standing. But I REALLY like her coloring though..

Her head looks somewhat small for her neck and body, but that could deffinitely be the angle of the picture. Her chest sticks out a little and could mean she'll carry her head high naturally. I agree with comment on butt high, but I don't see a problem with that (must be the QH booty). She has very good coloring, the way I'd want a paint! And, from the picture at least, looks like nice legs.

Thanks! Yeah.. she does have a naturally high head carriage. And she's got a hybrid QHxTB butt. It's high, but its not big and muscly!

I like your horse's conformation. I don't know specifically about an eventer's conformation, and the subject is pretty subjective, but she has a balanced look about her. She's got a powerful chest, deep heart-girth, very pretty head, and generally strong appearance. Someone mentioned butt-high, but if you look at her rump and her withers, they appear to match, and at 7 years old, she's going to have a bit of sway to her spine. I disagree with the comment about her head being too small. To me, it doesn't get much better than a filled-out, powerful body with a refined intelligent head. She's gorgeous.

Wow! Thanks so much!

What an adorable horse . I really like her head and the expression on her face; she looks like she will be quite an honest, hard-working horse for you!

I actually agree with Palominogirl, I don't think that she is actually butt high. I think that she just needs more muscling along her topline which will help her look more even and balanced. Her front end is definitely more muscled and developed than her read, and as a result, you may have to work with her to make sure that she doesn't end up on the forehand a lot in dressage. It's a little bit hard, because of the angle of the picture, to judge how her neck ties into her shoulder. And it is also a little bit hard to judge her neck as a result too -- she may be a little bit thick through the neck.

I love her coloring. I think it makes her very distinctive. But, it may be a little bit of a drawback in the dressage ring. Sometimes uneven leg whites may make it look like some dressage movements are unbalanced or simply "off." Also, because of her very unique white patch on the butt (particularly where it is placed), it may make it look like she is not fully engaging her rear.

Her front pastern angles may be a bit steep, but again it is hard to know for sure because it looks like she is on a little bit of a slope.

Overall, I think she is an adorable horse and I think she will make a great eventer for you!

Here's what I see. She has lovely expression and a nice kind eye. Her face is feminine. She appears to be a little ewe necked, but it's hard to tell from that photo. A ewe neck will make it difficult for her to flex at the poll. She has a nice sloping shoulder. I see nice balance from front to back, but her back is long compared to her underline, which will make it harder to get her collected. She has a definite downhill balance when looking from her hocks to her knees. This will make her more likely to be heavy on the forehand. She looks a little sickle hocked, and she's slightly over at the knee. Sickle hocks may make it easier for a horse to get underneath itself, but they can contribute to unsoundness issues down the road. Nice deep heartgirth.

Do I see dapples in her coat? I LOVE dapples!

Good looking mare.
