Critique Granite - Possible Buy - Went and Saw Him Today

Ok this is Granite. He is a 10 year old, 17.3 hand 3/4 Percheron 1/4 Tb gelding! I went and tried him out today and I am in LOVE! I looked him over from head to toe and the only fault I could find was that he toes in just a smidge on his front left, but its barely even noticeable. His owner rode him, then I got on him. He is big and forward but listens to every command perfectly, and his canter is to die for! They are asking $10,000 for him but its ver NEG. They just want him to go to a good home and they're willing to drop the price to around 7 or 8k, so not bad at all. Ok without further adeu here is Granite!

Here is his current owner riding him

And here I am on him! I only jumped him over a crossrail cause i haven't jumped any higher then that since my back surgery last december. Let me know what you think of him!

He looks like a solid citizen. Cadenced to the jumps, honest. Does he have a flying change? Has he been shown extensively? What are you wanting to use him for? I see a problem if you're looking to use him for the hunters, because the movement's simply not there. However, if you're wanting him for a jumper, I think he could do a 2-9', 3' course with some more training (if he's not already). Assuming he has a solid show record, my offer would hinge on the lead change. If it's a no, nothing more than $6,000. If it's a yes, between $7,000 and 8,000. If there's no show record, I'd offer $4,500 - I know that's way below what they're asking, but in my area, that's what he'd go for with no lead change and no show record.

His change is still a bit sticky but its there, hes shown at hits and sussex, I want to use him for hunter pacing and low level eventing (which he has done in the past)

He jumps 3' courses and has schooled 3'6

GO FOR IT!!!! I like the horse, but I love big black drafty looking horses. I personally like the slow ,even pace. Looks solid to me. I'd negotiate and get the vet out for the PPE ASAP. You make a good pair.

How did he feel, and did your trainer like him?

Yeah! I am glad that you liked Granite -- from your first post about him I have always thought that the big guy has a lot of potential. I do agree with DoWeDance that even at a reduced price of $8,000 that is a lot for a horse who is still "sticky" with his leads.

Also, I don't know how high you want to go with him, but even though the sellers say that they have schooled him at 3'6" just looking at how he jumped in the videos and his bulk, I am not entirely confident on where he will ultimately max out at.

But, DoWeDance is right, he looks like a very honest horse and one that would be a pleasure to ride day-in and day-out!

What a cutie! However I dis-agree with his price... There is NO way I would pay more than $5,000 for him... Unless he was a) registered b) passed a pre-purchase with flying colors and c) had a huge show record...

I am all for a horse with gorgeous, slow, rhythmic movement. I wouldn't go beyond $7000.00, but he seems like he has great potential.

Agreed. Is this is a farm you are buying from? I am in Orange County aswell and had a friend buy a horse in dutchess county, very similar to your horse. I think for hunter paces and low level eventing he would be good, but simply just not worth what they are asking. HOWEVER, if you have the money to spend and love him, go for it =)

I am going to ride him again in the morning, with a vet check in the late morning. If my trainer thinks he's a good fit and he passes the PPE then he will be mine by this weekend!! We're going to Negotiate price tomorrow! They said they are very willing to drop the price so I'm going to offer them 7,000 and we'll go from there.

What do you all think of Cowboy Casanova as a show name? :-D

Are you planning on doing Jumpers? Hunters? I don't see him holding up that long doing anything more than 2'6" with all that force of his body coming down after a fence... he seems much more drafty than TB and it just makes me concerned that he might break down more easily with so much jumping. He looks like a nice guy, just not 10k material... I wouldn't even pay over 5k for him.
