cortisone cream and scratches

I was doing a search on treatment for scratches (I swear Sam cannot go more then a day without injuring himself )

I've decided to try desitin, because my BO and BM also speak highly about it. Several HGS members had a mixture of desitin and Cortisone cream, but scratches is made worse with moisture and area should be kept as dry as possible correct? But I searched the cream and it's a moisturizer. Can anyone explain why it helps? I understand it is an ani-infalmetory, but wont it made the scratches worse?

When in an ointment form, helps the skin maintain moisture.

And a second question, today I put Furaserpentine on his scratches, was this a good move or no?

I've always used Zinc Oxide cream with great success. I realy like Penatin Baby Rash cream. You want something that is going to create a barrier that will not let water penatrate to the affected area.

zinc oxide (main ingredient in Desitin) is an anti-fungal agent. It's also a sun block. And the petroleum base acts as a barrier to prevents excessive amounts of water to enter or exit, meaning it maintains the moisture and keeps the skin lubricated and comfortable.
I use a mixture of Desitin, antibacterial ointment and steroid (hydracortisone or dex) on scratches/grease heel/creepy crud and it works better than anything else I've tried.

You want to keep a healthy balance of moisture so that the skin can heal. If it's too dry it won't be strong enough to heal. If it's too wet, then the structures will be weakened as well.

The desitin prevents excess moisture from getting into the skin as well as having antifungal properties. The hydrocortisone has anti-inflamatory properties. And triple antibiotic cream has antibacterial properties. All of these are things you want to target with scratches.

As alluded to, the type of "moisture" provided by desitin and the whole mix is much different than the "moisture" provided by water.
