I'm hoping my horses will be a little closer this winter. (within walking distance!) a i am going to do some jumping, i have hardly any confidence when it comes to jumping now, i used to have alot, but i havent jumped for ages, and my confidence has just slipped away from me. what should i do?? should i go back to basics?? if i should go back to basics, should i do it on my mare who has been there done that and could get bored, or should i go back with my mums horse, who rushes and need retraining in jumping aswell??

I would go back to the bascics for a few weeks maybe even like 2 months. Just until you feel comfortable on what your doing. I was the same way im just now getting backinto jumping after 1 1/2 years. You should do it on your mare, becaues if you do it on your moms horse, if it rushes you might loose your confidence even more. Also if you start doing bigger stuff and get nervous over it, go back to the little stuff..no rush! Good Luck! And have fun, remeber relax and breathe! I forget to breathe when i jump!

Yeah, i agree with horsecraze120. Stick to the basics until you feel good about it. My mom was the same way. She jumped alot when she was younger but then as she got older she did more dressage, so when she did a show (combined training) she practised on my horse at the time who was bomb proof and it gave her so much more confidence. Good luck and stay safe!

| Senior Member | I alwaysss start with ground poles after I stop jumping for awhile, just because your horse isn't use to it and becuase your not use to it. Take your time and SLOWLY raise them. Also, your horse looses shape in the winter, most of the time, becuase you don't ride and condition as much. _KATY

i still dont know weather to use my mare, who will get bored of going back to basics, or my mums gelding. if i did use my mare she could end up bolting, rearing or something. were as my mums gelding only rushes at the fence.

With jumping even the best riders work on the basics - position, timing, leg changes on landing, poles and of course the most important bit FLAT WORK (why do so many people who want to jump forget how important this is??????!!!!) Just because you havent jumped for a while dont worry - if your flat work is good then you will easily get back into jumping. I would work with the mare - just to give you some confidence again - it wont be long before you are feeling great about it |
