Question Conditioners?

Hi. I was wanting to know some good mane and tail conditioners. My horses tails are really dry and sometimes brittle. I either want a kind of conditioner that you can bathe them in, or another conditioner like cowboy magic, that you can rub in. I also put her tail in a three tube tail bag, and i leave it in for a really long time. Should i take her tail, wash it, shampoo it, let it dry, then put it back up? Or, should i take it down, brush, moisturize, then put it back up? Please help! And, sorry this is so long!

Thanks, Brianna

I really haven't had much experience with different brands, but I really like the Mane-n-Tail conditioner.

I would wash her tail, condition it really well and then bag it.

First and foremost I highly recommend discontinuing the use of Cowboy Magic products as they are silicone based which dries out the hair and will give you breakage.

I wash my tails thoroughly every couple/few weeks depending on how dirty it is. I'm an avid Johnson's Baby Shampoo or Baby Wash user as it's gentle and I use one that's free of dye and scents. I also like Healthy Hair and Eqyss products.

Depending on the extent of hair breakage, I do a deep condition/hot oil (Vo5) treatment. (I limit this to 'as needed')

As a spray on conditioner which I use a couple/few times a week I mix Healthy Hair Conditioner, Infusium 23 Leave-In, Eqyss Premire, and Healthy Hair Sunflower.

I keep my tails bagged, but when I hose after a ride, I take my tails down and rinse them, spray on conditioner, let dry, and re-bag.

DON'T use the cowboy magic. That stuff is good for getting the hair nice and slick and shinny for an occasion. But due to the silicon in it it's drying and damaging to the hair. You don't want to use it on a regular basis.

For deep conditioning there is a product out there called, Cholesterol. They sell it at drug stores and it's in the Ethnic hair care section. There is another great product (for people hair too) that I can't think of the name of right now. Some kind of oil (coconut???). ARGH I hate it when my brain quits on me. But if you ask Heavenly Jumper she can tell you.

Personally I don't wash the tail with shampoo. Shampoo takes oils away which is what you don't want. Shampoo is only really necessary in a horse with a cream or white colored tail to get stains out. If your horse has a darker tail just rinse the dirt out and apply the conditioner, work it in really good with your hands. This will also help to remove dirt.

Leave it in for a while (I usually do the tail first during a bath and then leave the conditioner in while I bathe the rest of the horse). Then rinse it out. Wait for the tail to dry then brush very carefully.

Personally if your going to use a tail bag I would let the hair dry and then put it up. I would hate for a mold or fungus to get in there and eat the hair away while you have the tail bag in.

Coconut oil coconut oil coconut oil!! I LOVE this stuff... HJ is our resident expert, she will have to come tell you more about it But it is amazing, and it smells good too. I saw a difference in the quality of my horse's tail after the first time I used it! Some dripped on the ground when I was using it on my horse's tail and all the dogs that were at the barn came flying over and were gathered around the drip licking the ground I take it dogs like it too!

Yep - I just slathered both of my mare's tails in the stuff - its awesome. I'm in the desert so their hair is super dry unless I treat it with coconut oil. I actually use coconut oil on my own hair, it is awesome stuff!

i don't really have to use a conditioner. i use sore no more massage shampoo because it doesn't dry out my horse's skin or tail. it's an all natural shampoo and it has liniment in it too and my horse really loves it. he gets so relaxed that he doesn't move a muscle when i am massaging him with it.
