Come see odd bits from long ago

This bit was Designed in Salt Lake City UT. in the year 1880. It is considered as a curb bit. Can you name and tell how it works? Have fun! I have more that I will post later.

It looks like some sort of one handed bit, for roping or driving maybe?

The ring at the bottom is for reins. The three rings are for elevation purposes. IE.. the one closest to you was the lightest, and gets harsher from there on. The hooks are for a curbstrap

NovDressageRdr was the closest to being correct.

THis bit is called the Hartman curb bit. Some of its qualities are kind of inept and I will tell you how.

THe center ring on top is the headstall ring. The rings by the curb hooks are for the reins and the third ring is for the leather front peice goes over the nose. The ring on the bottom of the shannks is for a tie down.

On its own there is very little leverage. With the reins at the "curb" ring you get a bit of nose pressure and more at the corners of the mouth and bars. The kicker comes in with the tie down strap. IF the horse raises his head to far up the tie down strap pulls on the center ring engagine the nose strap and the curb chain and the bars of the mouth. I am glad this bit has lived its life quickly and disappeared from modern day use.

My horse would kill me if I put the ancient correction in his mouth. The port has a point on it. Ouch!

THis bit is mild compaired to the India bit. Same concept though. Note the tip of the center mouth peice of the India bit. Also the cannons of the mouth peice are sharp. I have a picture of a "correction" bit from the third Century BC. I will post it later.
