I've always read that if your trying to grow out the tail you should cut down on the brushing and such. Because yes, it pulls out hairs. I think maybe leaving it alone or washing it, and brushing it and then putting it in a tail bag would be your best bet.

I leave tails alone. Only when I'm going to a show or something do I touch them.

I wash and rinse, shake out excess water then put plenty of conditioner on. Cowboy magic or showsheen are my favs.

Then I comb through with my fingers separating all the dreadlocks. Then I might use a brush or comb, but only for the satisfaction of feeling it glide through. There will be no knots left.

My horses have always kept their thick tails.

Everyone always says not to use combs, but I have been riding for 9 years now, and use a comb every time I do my horses tails, and have had no problems. With good quality feed, and careful grooming you can use a comb without damaging the tails looks. However, when I do use a comb I condition the tail first, and brush in small sections starting from the bottom, up. Then I either braid or put the tail in a tail bag, so then simply running a soft brush through keeps the knots out. Just my opinion.

i leave joeys tail alone for the most part (it is a mess LOL)
i comb it on occasion to try and keep knots out as best as possible.
but i start all the way at the bottom and hold right above where i am combing so i dont pull hairs out. and if i feel any tension froma knot i will try to un-do it with my fingers to try and not break the hair.
braiding it or using a tailbag will help keep the tail nice

I use a hair pick first, then use a comb to brush through, then I use a dandy brush and go over the tail again, then I use the pick again, just to make sure the tangles are out. Gypsie's tail is thick, and the pick thins it out where it looks good. I do this on all the horses about 3-6 times a week.

I use baby oil first. I pour some in my hands and rub it in, fingering the knots as I go. Then I brush with a wide tooth brush starting from the bottem and in small sections working my way up. I do the manes that way too. Tucker my Kentucky Mountain Horse has a tail that is flaxen and drags the gound by 3". His mane and forelock has never been cut either. Check him out in my pics.

I comb out Jiggy's tail but only when I've misted it in Show sheen or Cowboy magic to untangle easier so not as much hair falls out. Always start at the bottom- it helps aid in not ripping out hair.
