What I do for Santanna's tail is spray Show Sheen on it and let it sit a minute or two. Then I seperate the tail into sections (it's REALLY thick) and brush it out from the bottom up. Next is to take a comb and comb the tail out very gently so as not to pull out too many hairs. And voila. Clean tail. The Show Sheen is mainly just to keep it soft and silky, but it does help detangle as well. I find if I don't brush her tail every day or almost every day, it gets gross. And she still has a gorgeous tail, so daily brushing must not be hurting it.

Ok so here is the scoop. At our barn, we show American Saddlebreds. All of their tails drag on the ground by at leat 3 inches and are thick as thick, thus we NEVER EVER comb/brush them! We always pick them by hand and then keep them bagged in socks. They all have full, thick and healthy tails

I only brush it out before a show or when I'm gonna braid it and put it up and when I do I put plenty of conditioner in. I bought a cheap hair brush at wal-mart and brush it in small sections from the bottom up.

I wash, condition, and apply oil, then comb out once per fortnight.

I think my horses tails look pretty good, and I think keeping them clean, and itch free stops rubbing and hair loss.

Im lucky that my fencing is good, so I dont lose hair that way, but tail bags are a great idea if your fences arent ideal.

I usually don't touch my horses tails unless they are unbearable to look at. I mean dread locks and huge knots. I hate dirty horses lol. I have always used a comb for my horses tails but the brush seems nice too.

I use a human hair brush on their mane and tails. I brush it everytime I ride. I have never had a problem with it pulling out to much.

The best thing you can do to keep a tail long and full is nothing.

I have a yearling colt. No one has ever touched his tail, ever. His tail, as a yearling, is past his hocks, and thick.

The only time my horses tails are snarl free is the day before a show. There have been times that they have gone 8 months without having their tails combed/brushed etc..

If you have to comb the tail, be sure to have it clean and heavily conditioned and then pick though with your fingers for the most part.
