| Senior Member+ | Hey does anyone know where to get colstrum? I dont think my mare is going to carry full term. She isnt acting like it anyways. She is due at the end of March and I am pretty sure she is going to foal in the begining of March. I am in the USA so if its a link to a site please make sure that it is legal for me to import it from there. The one that I found wont import to the USA. |

![]() | Hmmm I know theres a site... www.cyberfoal.com ! Thats it! Well I don't see why you need colostrum O_O You should NEVER feed it unless the foal is a orphan, too much can really mess them up. Well anyways, if thats the case the site above has some pretty good suppliers for the stuff |

| Senior Member+ | I am only getting it as a safety measure. I just want to have it on hand if needed. I dont mind spending the money cause I know that if I dont get it then I will need it. Isnt that the way it always goes? lol. If she goes as early as she is looking then she prob. isnt gonna have any milk. She is due around March 28th. She is just starting to develop udders. So thats right on time. I just cant shake the feeling that she is gonna foal early. Okay, I am gonna start a little guessing game here. Gotta do something besides go insane. BTW I am gonna be a nervous wreck, this is my favorite horse. I will NEVER breed her. I am gonna go nuts. I will make a new post and everyone guess on what she will have. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Any more help is greatly welcomed |

![]() | Ahhh...I see. Well I always have some on hand but it sounded like you were just getting it for kicks. Nope, the mare will always have milk when she foals. So the only danger is if something happened to her (Unlikely) before the foal got a chance to take a drink. So you should be all right! Yes you can get it from your vet usually, but I'd ask first. If you can't don't worry, there are some supplements/powders I'm sure they have as a subsitute [ January 16, 2004, 04:15 PM: Message edited by: Nocturno ] |

Your mare should still develop some, but as the best way to ensure your foal's health, plan the vet to come out IMMEDIATELY so you can do a Plasma transfer. This also happens if the colostrum isn't the best or on foals that don't suck too well. After so long, less than 24 hrs, colostrum can't even be absorbed by the foal anyways. Yes milk has excellent nutritional value, but certain things like antibodies and stuff can't be absorbed after so long after birth. If you are really worried, I would plan a plasma transfer to get the best start for your foal. Good Luck

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Why do you think your mare is going to foal early? If she foals earlier than 300 days gestation, the chances of survival for your foal are poor. For the baby to have a chance, she needs to carry for at least 320 days. I wouldn't get colostrum from another breeding farm. You are just asking to bring in problems from other farms. Plus most mares don't produce much if any extra colostrum like cattle do. There are some things your vet can do if the mare doesn't produce enough or any such as plasma transfusions, etc. However, they are expensive and don't have the best success rate. |
