Colour Genetics

Hi all,
Just a curiousity question. If a grey pinto was bred with a palomino, what are the chances of a dilute? I am not sure what the genes of the parents are just the mare is pinto and stallion is palomino.

Pony Cuddles - 2 totally separate questions!

If you breed a grey to a palomino or buckskin or smoky black, then you have a 50% chance of a dilute colour
If you breed that same grey to a perlino or a cremello, you then have a 100% chance of a dilute foal. What *colour* that dilute foal will be will be based on what the original base coat colour of the grey horse was before she greyed out ...
Now - if your grey is HZ, the foal may well be born buckskin or palomino but over time will fade out to a grey - the same as their dam. So - genetically you will have a dilute foal that will breed true (as a dilute) but visually you will have a fleabitten grey over time ...

Makes sense?!

Exactly - gray and the dilute and pinto are all separate. The paly gives you a 50/50 chance of a dilute. The gray gives you at least a 50/50 chance of whatever color turning gray. The pinto gives you a 50/50 chance of having a pinto of whatever color that might also turn gray

As for the colors, without knowing what color the mare really is, you could get chestnut, bay, black, palomino, buckskin, or smokey black.

Are dilutes as bad as some say? Harder to look after, can't be shown?

No, in general dilutes and double dilutes are no harder to care for than any other horse. Some double dilutes (cremellos and perlinos) require a little more sun protection, but otherwise are no different than any other horse.

As to showing, it depends on the breed. I know that some breeds don't allow double dilutes to be shown, though I can't think of any that have problems with single dilutes (palominos, buckskins, and smoky blacks). Recently the AQHA has accepted double dilutes and many are doing pretty well in the show ring; many also did very well while they were with the APHA as well so no, double dilutes can do just fine in competition when they are allowed to show.

It will be a shetland and hopefully we will be able to register it, if the registery will allow dilute shetlands?

I think that covers just about anything that horse genetics can come up with! I wonder what exactly a "non-standard" color is?

I would say yes, you could register the foal regardless of the color.
