Colour change in buckskin coat colour???

Help!!!

Who has been breeding or owning buckskins for awhile that might know the answer to this question???

Here are some pictures I took of Faux Finish at her show yesterday:

and:

and:

and then these were taken of her 3 months ago:

and:

Do ALL buckskins go through this huge colour change as the season goes along and will she get darker in the spring again when she sheds out her winter coat? And if I clip her for the Royal in November, will she go a funny grey/beige colour and not even look buckskin at all??? Does anyone know?

Last year she was quite light and then when she shed out this spring she was this gorgeous deep caramel colour which I loved. We have intentionally made it a point of turning her out in the morning only so the sun doesnt bleach her coat out so I dont think its a sun fading issue at all ...

Is this just a "buckskin thing"???

Thanks a bunch everyone!

WOW!! shes goregeous!! Sandy did go through a weird color change. He started out a grulla/bayish color and turned into a pretty goldish buckskin!! He does tend to get darker in the winter though!!

IS she stalled a lot? They can fade in the sun. Also diet can change the color. I think all horses change some what depending on age and time of year.

Here is my buckskin. I did not believe he was one when I first got him. He is 8 and I have had him a year.

A year ago:

And 2 months ago:

And 3 weeks ago:

(Note: I did color his mane and tail darker due to serious sun bleaching, but did nothing to his body color)

I don't really know if the sun makes that much difference, but they will often shed out darker and then go creamier as the summer goes by. Not really an expert, I'm going off one palamino and one buckskin that I've known and they both did the same thing.

Thanks everyone - I love her colour too (but I really DID like her that deep caramel colour better!) and I had no idea she had changed this much (since I see her every day) until I did this picture comparison and then it was an *OMG* moment! I couldnt believe how much lighter she has gone in a few months!

Shell - she is inside from noon on, or she stays out later if its an overcast day, or we were turning her out from 4:00 - 5:00pm until 9:00 or 10:00 pm to avoid the worst sun
And yeah - cant believe the changes in your guy either!
And yes - I have heard that diet CAN have a bearing on coat colour as well, but the rule is the more protein in the diet, the DEEPER the coat colour will become and let me tell you, FF is on a VERY high protein diet so if anything, she should look like your guy now!!!

I have actually had people accuse me (for lack of better terminology?!) of her being a grey and me trying to "pretend" she is a buckskin and I explain that she cannot be grey since neither sire or dam are grey and they insist I am trying to pull the wool over people's eyes??? and claim she is something she is not ...

Does anyone have any idea what colour she will go if I do clip her for the show in November? I'd just hate for her to go a funny beige/mousey/weird looking colour!

Yes buckskin's do change shades of buckskin, as do palomino's. She will go darker in the spring, as it warms up and if you rug her she will get darker.

livermol, is great for shineing coats and also makes the coat darker if fed to a horse. I think if she were clipped she would go a lighter colour. Because when you see bays/browns they always go lighter.
