Have you thought about silver?

www.silverequine.com

I noticed a flaxen tint to her mane. Could be sun bleaching, but if not silver may be something to consider. Is she an appy? I do believe silver has been found in that breed before.

Here is a smoky black appy... that might also carry the silver gene. When he was tested that test was not yet available. This is him at two...

Here he is from a month to a year...

The last two horses are the sire and dam. We believe the dam is silver bay appy.

but he's a pintaloosa and his dam's listed as a grade appaloosa. So there's not telling where that possible silver came from. Additionally if you look at that one photo of the dam, she' got a dorsal strip so it's possible that she's a smokey grulla or a dark brown dun.
then you also can't tell if it's the appaloosa LP genes making his mane and tail lighter or if it is another gene Especially since he wasn't born with the light mane and tail. It looks like it roaned out that way.
also he's darker as a foal then now so that also leaves the possiblilty that the LP roaning is making him look lighter. But we definnately won't know for sure until the test results are in.

My point is simply that you cannot tell by looking at the outside of the horse what the genes are on the inside. Test the horse and then you will know for sure. I can bet that no one would guess that he is smoky black. The lab did not believe the results either so they did them several times to be absolutely sure. Unfortunately the owner of the mare thought it was too mean to pull hair so we will never know what color she really is.

The pic of the dam isn't the best, but she definitely seems to have some silver traits. Her stripe looks like countershading to me, but again that could be because of the picture quality. Both of my silver mares (one silver buckskin, one silver black) have what appears to be a dorsal stripe, but it's simply countershading.

There are just so many variations of silver. I wouldn't be surprised at all if your colt was a carrier. If you do decide to test him, I highly recommend Animal Genetics Inc. They are fast and very reasonable. Only $25 for the silver test. I had my results within two weeks. www.horsetesting.com

Silver or no silver, he's a gorgeous color!

If the mare is simply characteristic where did his spots come from? Or are those just Bend Or's?
