Color Question?

Hey guys! I was wondering if you could answer a question I have about Teak's daddy...
Here's a pic of him...

The APHA made Chuck, the owner of Mo (Teak's daddy) change his color on his registration papers... it was the second year I was breeding Coco. I remember clearly because Chuck asked me if Mo looked like a Dun. He has no dorsal, no darker ear tips, no leg stripes... no dun factor at all. Chuck had him registered as a Buckskin (which is what I still call him) a smutty buckskin...

The APHA contacted Chuck that year and told him that a Buckskin couldn't have had a foal of that color out of that color mare (don't remember what colors they were), that Mo must be a Dun.

So I was wondering if you guys could tell me which set of parents a palomino is more likely to come from?

Buckskin/Sorrel
Dun/Sorrel

I also have a copy of his progeny report up until 2004 if that will help

A palomino could only come from the Buckskin/Sorrel parents. Palomino is chestnut with a Cream gene, so you would get the Cream gene from the buckskin and the chestnut from the sorrel parent.

Dun+Sorrel would make a red dun or another dun; unless the dun was really a "Dunskin" (Dun + Cream).

Thanks! That's what I thought... I think the APHA made a boo-boo...

Here's another.... same year Teak was born Chuck's mare had a foal by Mo also... Palomino Overo colt with blue eyes... the mare was a red dun.

SO... can a Red Dun mare and a Dun stallion have a Palomino? I would think not... it's just more proof that he's a buckskin right? And the same mare and Mo the year before had a Palomino colt as well...

This is the colt...

What a beautiful, adorable little baby! I want one .

No, there is no way a Red Dun and a Dun could make a Palomino, unless the Dun was really a Dunskin (carrying Cream and Dun). So, unless there is a possibility that the stallion is a Dunskin, he MUST be a Buckskin because that is the only way he could sire foals with the Cream dilution.

Ok... I'm not sure if he's a dunskin... I KNOW that his sire was a Palomino and his dam was a black...

here's his pedigree...

There MIGHT be a small possibility that his sire was a Dunalino (Palomino + Dun), but just glancing over his pedigree I highly doubt it.

And black cannot hide Dun. A black + Dun would be a Grulla/Grullo so not easy to mistake one for the other.

So, I would say 98% chance that the stallion is a Buckskin Overo and not a Dun Overo just going by foals, his pedigree, and his appearance. I agree with you; he really just looks like a sooty buckskin to me, not a Dun.

OMG that baby is *so* cute! Can I breed Queen to Mo, pretty please?!

I don't know what the APHA is thinking, seriously. You'd think that people from a "color" registration would know their colors!

Hey... if you're serious let me know! Mo throws some awesome babies... with good minds! He throws color about 50/50... out of 27 foals he's had 14 colored and 13 solid (which is normal for an overo)...

The owner, Chuck is also really friendly and is willing to help you out.

coat color of foals ~
bay - 4
black -2
buckskin -5
chestnut/sorrel -5
dun -2
grullo -3
palomino -6
(these stats are just up until 2004... I haven't updated them)

When Chuck called after that colt was born and told us to come and see it he wouldn't tell me what it looked like. We got there and my mom took one look and said "We'll trade you!!!"

He knew how much I was hoping to get a colored foal of my own and when he came down to see Teak and saw he was solid he offered a free breed back. It's in his contract... a LCFG. But I said I was fine with Teak (I wish I had done it now)... at the time I was relieved the foaling had went fine with no complications and was thinking of the stress and worry of another 11 months...
