Yes, he's bay, no doubt about it.

Not all bays have solid black legs all the way to the knees/hocks. Many have those tan hairs - some more, some less. My old TB gelding was more tan around his tendons in the back, like your guy is, when he had his Winter coat, but they shed out to darker hairs for his Summer coat.

To clarify what Shannon said - homozygous for black DOES mean homozygous for black, but it doesn't necessarily mean the horse IS black. The horse can be black, bay, buckskin, perlino, smokey black, grulla, etc, and be homozygous for black.

Bay... the silvery (tannish in the summer) marks on the lower legs are the "wild-type" bay gene at work.

LOL I should have been more specific- Sire is a friesian, Dam is registered American Warmblood, and is out of a Clydesdale mare (bay or black is a safe assumption), but I'm not sure what my colt's sire's color was.
