Hahahaha. Michelle...That is actually MY fault.

When looking at Acme Acre's hypothetical pedigree for the colt that was just born by Player (dun) out of Page's Promise (red dun) I noticed that both horses were in All Breed Pedigree as buckskin. When I went to the edit page, I found that "buckskin/dun" was combined as a color option. I emailed the webmaster and he separated them, so unless people correct horses originally categorized under "buckskin/dun" I'm guessing it will just show up as both

LOL @ Shannon. What a girl. Good for you for educating them. ha ha

So the buckskin red dun should really just be a red dun, right?

she really does look like a smokey black, but if i'm correct she would need to have dilute in her genes like her sire a cremello.

Neither parent would have to be a cremello for this horse to be a smokey black. As already evident, smokey black can hide, so the sire here may have actually been smokey black.

Do let us know what the DNA results say! You won't know if dun is there or not, but you'll for sure know if creme is there. In the picture, the stripe really looks like countershading, but with the rest of the coat being so dark, it's a bit hard to tell.

Thanks JB. That's what I think must have happened. I really can't see her being a dun or grullo. But that pic. of the really dark 2 yr. old stallion that April posted sure makes a guy think. lol

I will definitely post the results of the creme gene test when I get it back.

Thanks everyone!

Nope, could be either buckskin, red dun, or dun. Only grulla was separate, as was palomino. I guess that might have created more chaos

Here is another very dark grulla: chinook Canyon

He's a Kiger mustang, but he has been confirmed to carry the dun gene by siring a dun foal out of a bay mare I believe.

As I understand it, when he's freshly clipped you can see his dorsal stripe, shading on his face, and legs stripes. I'm wondering if perhaps he's just sooty in addition to being dun?

Slowrider - this is Linden Mo Dean Girl (I think I have her on Allbreed) she is a Grullo but looks dark like your mare. Her dad was grullo, mom was sorrel. In the winter, it's harder to see her dorsal and primitave markings, but they are there. She looks remarkably like your girl.

Side view

Looking down her back, see the hair in her ears like your mare, same color and style.

Closer view of the dorsal.

Last spring as a 3 year old.

She is Grullo, but sometimes it's harder to tell with a dark winter coat. I really believe your mare could and probably is a grullo also.

i have 2 black grullo's and their dorsals are obvious .

i'd say this horse is either brown or black.

there still is not a test for dun - but i understand its in the process -

but you can test for agouti and see if the horse has the agouit or not - then you know its not black or grullo - if it does not carry agouti then grullo or black are the only two possible colors (due to her coloration she has) also you can test for creme, and if she doesn't carry the creme then you know she is not a smokey black either.

If you really want to know as much as you can then i'd test for creme and agouti and while you are at it you may as well see if she carries a red gene or two black genes.

if you want to see a couple of black grullos you can go to my website and look for Sparkin My Fancy (stallion) and Jazza Belle Moon (broodmare)
