Exclamation COLIC KILLS... read this

By BFF's horse rebel (( *jess*'s horse)) died a couple hours ago of colic. I don't know much about colic but I do know this : colic is caused by eating too much... if im not mistaken. Since horses can't throw up.. they try to deal //w it as best as they can. Usually they will try to roll- THIS WILL KILL THEM!!! rolling will twist up thier intestines. you should call a vet immediatly and hold your horse so they will not roll.

I saw rebel dead and it was the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life. I hope none of you ever see this.

I LOVE YOU JESS!!!

Poor you to see the horse dead, I have seen quite a few now and been with them while put to sleep.

Colic is the biggest killer of horses worldwide, it has many causes, and many types, spasmodic colic, sand colic, Etc.

What happens when the horse is beyond help, or is unable to get to an Equine hospital to recieve surgery, the gut has twisted itself in a knot and only surgery will deal with this.

There is thought now that you can let your horse/pony roll with bouts of colic(they do this to eliviate the pain) however on this one, I don't, I still walk round till vet arrives to give meds.

Colic caught earlier enough as a very good prognosis, muscle relaxants and pain killers.

COLIC IS THE BIGGEST KILLER OF HORSES WORLDWIDE, SECOND IS LAMINITIS.

Colic and Laminitis are both Emergencies and need prompt veterinary treatment never delay for a second.

I am very very sorry for you and your best friend, I was with one when it was put to sleep around 10 days ago.

With love and Hugs

Jane

My horse got out of her stall and pigged out on everything. Scarryest thing of my life. She got walked around all day and everyone kept a close eye on her. Sorry to hear about your horse, and it's a great reminder to everyone how dangerous colic can be.

My friend had just bought a second horse for her husband (the first died about a month after they got him, some how he got his blanket around his neck in the pasture and broke his neck). The had only had this horse for a week, when they were trailering him to her parents house. They felt the trailer shaking, stopped and took him out but he seemed fine, By the time they got to her parents, the horse could barely stand, so they rushed him to the vet, (over an hour away) who said that he could save him as long as one small section of his intestines hadn't been affected. Well, when he got inside of the horse, the one part was affected and there was nothing he could do.
It was really sad because they had lost two horses in as many months, and now her husband is afraid to own another horse.
Colic can be very scary, the same week I moved my horse to where I live now, I insured him. I wanted to make sure that if he needed colic surgery, that I could pay for it no matter what.
