With the way his feet are, I'd be suprised if he wasn't lame.

In fact, if you did nerve blocks, you might discover that he's lame in both feet. Just more so in the right.

Go right ahead, I do this myself on Scout's hooves to see the change.. it was helpful when I was treating his frog and could see the difference.

Personally I think any soreness would be higher up in the leg, in the fetlock. I'm sure he probably has some tenderness in the back of his foot, but the way he's set up right now, the inside suspensory ligaments are under a lot of stress.

The frog itself could be causing pain as well depending upon the terrain. The angle/length of the toe could cause the appearance of lameness (some would classify it as a lameness in itself, some would not) without there really being any pain persay.

I do agree, that if there isn't pain present higher up, he's definately set up for it to happen in the future.

Exclamation AANHCP instructor comment

I haven't posted in quite awhile due to the busy summer season but I feel I should comment on these photos. First it must be explained that a PT in the AANHCP is not yet certified and is in the "learning phase" of an intensive program. If your trimmer is not listed on the AANHCP website this means the student has not yet been approved for "independent study" and has less than half of the requirements necessary for certification. Once posted, they may "pick up" clients with the understanding that they are students as agreed upon by both parties. These hooves have medio-lateral as well as dorsal-palmer imbalances and the heel will continue to under-run as long as the toe is too long for the desired breakover to occur. Your student has a TC leader (someone to oversee them in the program) and they can be contacted for assistance. I would advise an honest discussion with your trimmer and ask them if their TC leader can assist with your situation. Your horses hooves appear supercoriatic but without before photos I cannot comment further. A "model trim" will promote healing if the entire horse is taken into account hence the name Association for the Advancement of Natural Horse Care Practices. Best of luck to you and your horse and feel free to google hooflady for more information.

So they changed the name... when I was involved with them it was "American Association of Natural Hoof Care Practitioners".

I may have missed it but is anything being done, medicament wise, to treat the central cleft? As long as there is infection you probably will have pain. Getting it to open up is fine but you still need to treat the bugs that are there. I am having a hard time getting detil from these pics. Overall somethng is nqr. But I can't get a good handle on it.

see the bulb on the lateral heel? That's a "blow out" as she calls it. The hoof has horrible medio-lateral imbalance and the outer heel has been crushed by the opposing medial toe height. Hence; the bulb has blown an abscess out the back of the hoof. The LAST thing this trimmer should do is lower any heel laterally. The toes need to be shortened to bring the breakover back and this may take a few months to accomplish. I don't understand the apprehension in reducing the "collateral groove" and clearing out any infectious materials. This hoof has run forward because someone is afraid to trim any sole at the toe and didn't maintain a live sole plane or proper breakover. Your photos are wonderful and I sure hope your trimmer learns something from this mishap. It seems there are some knowledgeable people on this site and I'd listen to their advise...
