I agree Shannon.....there are times when you have situations that call for drastic measures/treatments. And when we are in those situations, it becomes a matter of compromises. But, like you said, shedding isn't something that should move an ower to make that choice. It isn't a matter of health or life/death...it is simply a matter of a natural function.

My question would be....what happens if you use this for a few years so a show or sale animal is ready, then you stop using it? I wonder if the system becomes so messed up that natural shedding becomes an issue.

IMO, this is the same-old, same-old need a "quick fix" mentality that spurs our drug manufacturers to earn billons of dollars each year. So far, the best answer I have found for shedding is a little labor and good nutirion coupled with a good deworming progam.

I would also have to wonder what happens after a period of use to the coat? While they claim it helps a coat that simply needs better nutrition, they don't mention that the toxic aspect of the compound may also result in the same coat quality.

as for the comments about helping cushins ponies to shed their coat, there is a real possibility that it would actually poison the horse as the condition causes the liver and kidneys to sometimes not function properly due tothe hormonal imbalance.

personally i would be concerned with people buying it for dishonest reasons.

Dark Lady...you make some valid comments.

I think that we often buy things or think they are safe because they are "natural". But nature makes many poisonous things....heavy metals are one. A few years ago, there was a product that many people were using (something for the hoof...don't remember what). It was applied to the coronary band (the most sensative part of the hoof). Everyone raved about how well it worked. It had been sold by the company for at least 5-7 years with no complaints...only testmonials to its effectiveness. It eventually was pulled from the market when the government forced it. The manufacturers had been warned several times that this was a toxic substance (made with mercury! ), but they kept producing and selling it anyway...afterall, no horses had died from it and it worked. The label even listed mercury as an ingredient...it didn't matter, people ignored it, the company ignored it. Sometimes people just don't use common sense.

My farrier suggests baking soda to aid shedding.
The cushings horse at my barn has a scoop a meal and it really helped him shed more then he has ever been able to. It also helps keep his coat clean.

My farrier is 79 and has been doing this since his 20s and has never had ill effects..
Does anyone else do this/ heard of it?
WHat are the effects? Neg effects? Would it work the same way?
