| Senior Member+ | What do you mean "poisoning"? There is clover "slobbers" which causes the horse to drool excessively - often VERY excessively. It's just lovely

| Senior Member | I have never even heard of clover poisoning. As far as i know clover is not harmful and only causes slobbering. Was your horse eating hay that had clover in it? Sweet clover that has been exposed to mold or has molded can produce a chemical (dicumarol) that can cause blood coagulation. However the symptoms are normally death in the animal because of blood clotting or hemorrhage. But there are sometimes symptoms of stiffness or lameness due to bleeding into the muscles and joints. GI bleeding is also evident. I am under the impression that the animal has to consume a large quantity of spoiled clover.

| Senior Member+ | Slobbering alot is just from a fungus that gets on clover. It doesn't hurt your horse though. They just slobber alot for a while.

| Senior Member+ | Ok, time to describe what the horse is doing. There is rye staggers, caused by eating infected perennial rye, which can cause some major neurological symptoms.
