So he did not eat hay with clover in it? He just was grazing on pasture, and possibly got kicked?

Well we got some new rounds from a different supplier a few days ago. We roll them out to keep the fighting down,as well as eleviate(sp?) some of the dust. There was a little clover in the one bale, none since. Which leads me to think he mightve just gotten a good whack from my walking 'tank'(huge QH muscle rear ). I still plan to have a vet out ASAP,unless hes 100% very soon.

Neurological disease including WNV can affect the front end as well as the back.

I would not be waiting around for him to get better...the earlier you treat any kind of swelling of the brain and/or spinal cord (from disease or trauma) the better your chances of recovery.

I've never heard of clover causing this sort of problem. I hope you have had the vet out by now - neuro illnesses can get out of hand very very quickly.

Botulism can be found in roundbales, silage, and haylage.
Symptoms:rapid onset of ataxia, or loss of motor coordination, muscle flaccidity, loss of control of the tongue and tail, inability to swallow, inability to stand, and death."

A horse at our barn had alsike clover poisoning and he could not walk. He was very weak, especially in the hind end. They were very scared that they were going to lose him. He lost complete control and when the vet came out, she diagnosed this after doing tests. Turns out...we tested all the horses there and it ended up being that a couple others had it as well but were not displaying symptoms. They are all alright now - and the gelding that got the worst of it, is doing very well!

[Here] is a link to an information sheet that the barn owner has provided.
