| Senior Member+ | West Nile makes them weak and wobbly in the back end. The best thing I can say is try to keep him still, so he doesn't fall and flipp. Get a vet out ASAP to do some blood work. Did he eat OK? Did this just come up suddenly? Is there any chance he slipped a disc?

| Senior Member+ | Or did he maybe crack his head hard on something? There are a handful or poisioness plants that can cause staggering.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I was just watching them eat, when he started walking down towards me from barn. He was very wobbly, tripped and fell twice(his backend is fine-its his front that seems the problem),and has an extremely wide stance between steps. I tried to give him a treat to see if hed eat(he did-no problem swallowing),and its almost likes hes sparactically 'incoherent'.... Still on hold..... |

| Senior Member+ | There are several neurological conditions, toxicities and even traumatic injury that can cause neurological symptoms. Your best bet is to get ahold of a vet and get him seen ASAP. Until then, put him in a small area away from the other horses with no sharp corners or projections and no areas where he can get cast if he falls. Also try to check his temperature as a fever or lack thereof will help your vet to narrow down the possible causes.

| Senior Member+ | I think that only applies to cured clover. Though that does explain where the op has heard of clover poisoning before. Then again, I don't guess that we know that this horse hasn't been eating cured clover.... |

| Senior Member+ | OK well if it's his front end then I am almost 99.9% sure it's not west nile. I'm not sure what it could be though. Good luck. Sending goos thoughts and prayers.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks for the link DR...helped alot. If he did get any clover,it would have been a very, very minimal amount. When I was out there a few minutes ago, it looks like his lights are coming back on. He was able to walk better(still stumbling but had some momentum this time, and quite abit more stability). Hes eating fine, I checked every inch of him for any puncture wounds, bumps etc, found nothing. We had heard earlier the head mare squealing,so am wondering if he didnt just get knocked real good. Im keeping watch, hes in a round pen alone with food and water. Will keep you guys posted for sure, and thank you for your help in my moment of panic! |
