Clipping winter coat??

I was wondering.....

Can you clip a horse's winter coat when it starts warming up? My problem is that when spring comes in and the shows start rolling around, Rocket takes FOREVER to shed out. So is there some way to clip their winter coat for showing? Or is there some herbal remedy to help shed out faster?

He's blanketed and stalled in the winter but still develops a thick winter coat.

But aren't most clips down to the skin? I'm just wanting to get rid of the long, winter hair.

their is no way you can get rid of the long winter hair the only was is to minimise gowth before it grows in normally by being stalled an rugged up all year round

you cant really trim it you can just make him look smarter by clipping

You can clip them any time, my friend clips her horse in the spring, because she does competitive and enduranc rides, you just have to blanket them....Cathy

Okay I know your problem. I body clip my horse a month before show season every year... When you use actual body clippers it DOESNT take it down to the skin, Im not quite sure where you heard that it does.

I body clip all of my horse... Just a minute and I will find a picture.
These pics are right after I completley body clipped him... They still have a decent amount of coat, but depending on where you are, you might still have to blanket him til it warms up a bit.

And then it grows back to normal by show season, Quick2Skip? Or do you mean to say that you cut the winter coat down to the normal length it would normally be if they didn't have their winter coat? I might do that. The only problem is that it's cooler than normal around show season, even living so far south. So, I'll just keep him rugged up and try to stall the growth.

Even if you clip in the spring, you are only clipping the winter coat, which is getting ready or already shedding out, and the new summer coat is just starting to grow....I have clipped one horse 3 times between sept. and april....no problems...Cathy

Get decent clippers and a ten blade (or two lol). Bath your horse first, makes it easier on the clippers.

Blanket if you clip. Groom often after (they are itchy, plus helps the coat)....also use healthy hair care when you groom.
