Is it alright to bathe in 40 degree weather? o_O I was told nothing below 50 is very safe for bathing.

I have the large Oster adjustable speed clippers, pricey but worth their weight in gold! Cathy

I hunter clip my horses during the winter and I live in New York. You just have to make sure they have plenty of blankets and they are in a stall and you should be fine.

I wouldn't bathe, no. What I would do is take a moist (NOT DAMP) sponge and sponge them over ONLY if nessiciary. And you have to make sure they are dry before letting them go off again.

What do you mean by this question?

The main reason I clip a month in advance is to prevent "track marks" in their coat.

Ive body clipped a couple weeks before a show too, and he looked fine at the show. Its the same coat regardless, by body clipping you just remove all the winter coat, and you shed it all for him. The summer coat is just underneath all that fuzz. If I clip in March, they get blanketed until at least May when it starts to warm up some more.

I don't know how I can better clarify that question. As in, when they have their normal coat, how short that is. Cut the winter coat down to that length?

Just use a ten blade, It takes it down to the right length, but it will end up being shorter than their summer coat would be.

if you have miniature horses will know what i am talking about. i have 2 miniature horses and miniature horse fur is nothing like big horse fur it probley never gets silky and shiney like that of a big horse. so durring the summer we clip our minis about 5 times or depending on how many shows we go to we clip about 2-3 days before the show. with our minis we do they bodies in a 10 or 20 blade there bridle paths in a 50 there faces in a 40 and shave all the hair off of their nose and above their eyes. in miniature horse showing you really have to perfect the look of the horse even if it does not look natural.
after that we put tuns of make up on they have more makeup then me
on there bald noses we put baby oil to make them shine. this is an example...

p.s. i wish this was my horse!!!

Clippers you need are a Super 2 Speed (Andis) and a couple of T-84 blades (they're a wider blade that looks like a hammerhead shark). You'll also need a 10 for the ears (outside and inside). Ideally you'd want to go with a pair of large animal clippers (for cattle, NOT sheep) to do this and use the smaller clippers for the arm pits and other delicate areas. You HAVE, HAVE, HAVE to have a horse REALLY clean to get a decent clip. When we've clipped Barrel and Rope horses that were filthy, we'd take them down with the big clippers, wash them (even in cold weather), blanket/cooler them until they were dry and then go back over them with the big clippers if needed or the small. Key is to go DIRECTLY against the hair. If you don't, you'll get track marks.

Summer...... you must mean a 30 blade, because there is no such thing as a 20. Have you tried the Silverado Face Glo instead of baby oil? It would be much better for them in the big picture of things since it has sunscreen in it
